assessment details of the same.

(A) FIRST LANGUAGE ENGLISH (0500)

PAPER PATTERN

Paper 1: Reading

Candidates answer three compulsory questions on three texts which may be on a similar topic.
Question 1 Comprehension and Summary task (30 marks)

Comprehension task: This question requires candidates to respond to Text A.


Candidates respond to a series of sub-questions. These include short answers testing
understanding of both explicit and implicit meanings.

Summary task: This question requires candidates to respond to Text B.


Candidates answer a selective summary task in their own words. Candidates write their
summary as continuous writing of no more than 120 words.

Question 2 Writer’s Effect (20 marks)

Short-answer questions: This question requires candidates to respond to Text C.

Language task: This question requires candidates to respond to Text C.


Candidates write about 200–300 words.

Paper 2: Directed writing and composition

SECTION –A: DIRECTED WRITING (25 marks)

Candidates answer one compulsory question on one or two texts totalling 650–750 words in
length.

Candidates use, develop and evaluate the information in the text(s) to create a speech.

Candidates write about 200–250 words.

SECTION B: COMPOSITION: (25 marks)

Candidates answer one question from a choice of two titles: two narrative topics.

Candidates write about 200–300 words.

PAPER PATTERN:

Paper 1: Listening

Approximately 50 minutes, including 6 minutes' transfer time, 40 marks

This paper consists of 37 multiple-choice and matching questions. Candidates answer


all questions by selecting the correct option or options. Each question tests
comprehension of recorded texts (e.g. dialogues, announcements, conversations).
Candidates hear each recorded text twice. At the end of the test candidates will be
asked to transfer their answers onto the separate answer sheet.

Paper 2 – Reading & Paper 4 – Writing

Written paper, 1hour 30 minutes, 65 marks

This paper consists of four groups of questions, each comprising a number of multiple-
choice and matching questions, as well as questions requiring short answers in French, a
form-filling task, a directed writing task and an extended writing task in response to
given contexts and prompts.
Paper 3 – Speaking

Approximately 10 minutes (plus 10 minutes of preparation time), 40 marks

Each speaking test lasts approximately 10 minutes, and is structured as follows:

• A warm-up section which is not assessed (approximately 30 seconds)

• One role play – candidates respond to five transactional questions to, for example,
accomplish a task or obtain goods or services (approximately two minutes)

• One topic conversation – candidates respond to questions on each topic to share


views, opinions and experiences (four minutes per topic conversation)

a range of perspectives, personal, local and/or national, global, and will be drawn from a list of
eight topics.
Paper 2: Individual report

Candidates research on the global aspect of any one topic area of the term 1 topics and submit a
report based on their research. The title of the research is devised by the candidates themselves.
