REFLECTIONS

Reflection for preparation process Each group will write a reflection on the process which is experienced during the
preparation process of the unit and lesson plan as well as the materials. Guideline Questions for your Reflections:

a. Why did you choose this unit topic?

We chose this unit because it aligns with students' interests, offers practical real-world application, and enhances their
language skills through engaging activities. Exploring movies and characters not only captivates their attention but also
provides a meaningful context for language development, making the learning experience both enjoyable and relevant.

b. When you are planning your unit and lesson plans, which of the ASSURE steps do you think you spend most of your
time thinking about? Why?

We spent a significant amount of time on the 'Select Strategies' step of the ASSURE model when planning units and lesson
plans. This step involved choosing the instructional methods and activities that best align with the learning objectives and
the needs the 5th grade students.

c. For each individual phases in the ASSURE model, please write your experiences and rationales while designing your unit
plan, lesson plan, and materials. Make sure your reflection involves your answers to these questions:

o How did you determine the prerequisite skills or knowledge (if any) for your plan? What is the rationale behind the time
allocation?

In determining prerequisite skills, we analysed the topic(movies) and what grammar/vocabulary was going to be taught. We
thought of what subjects came before these and checked the other grades’ unit plans as well. The rationale behind the time
allocation was to allow for sufficient practice and reinforcement of key principles, understanding of the subject would be
ensured. Additionally, the allocation was designed to accommodate diverse learning paces.

o How did you determine and write your objectives?

We determined the objectives based on the activities we chose. We thoroughly thought what knowledge our learners would
gain after completing these activities. We analyzed the overall goal of the unit. Then, we considered conditions and criteria
to define under which conditions the success would be achieved.

o How did you decide instructional methods, media and materials? Why did you choose them?

The decision making process for these involved a careful consideration of several factors, ensuring alignment with the
learning objectives, student grade, and the overall educational context. We ensured a clear understanding of the specific
skills and knowledge that students needed to acquire. Later on, we worked on identifying the types of activities and
resources that would do best in achieving the objectives. We selected appropriate instructional methods, that was, deciding
whether individual, small group, or whole-class activities were the most suitable for the achievement of the objectives we
identified. We chose our media and materials accordingly, and considered the practicality of implementing these. They all
were aligning with our chosen methods.

o What is the instructional theory on which your instructional activities are based? Or do you use eclectic approach for
them? Why?

Constructivism, because the activities we used involve students watching videos, discussing, and creating movie posters.
These tasks allow students to construct their understanding of movie types, character traits, and vocabulary. Cognitivism, As
students are writing down new words in their vocabulary knowledge, discussing movie types and character traits, and
creating posters involve cognitive processes such as memory, attention, and problem-solving. Social learning theory, as we
implemented group activities such as watching videos, creating posters, and exchanging them, these all promote social
interaction and collaborative learning. Additionally, students interview movie characters, sharing opinions and hypothetical
responses.

o How did you plan to utilize these instructional methods, media and materials?
By systematically planning and aligning instructional methods, media, and materials with the learning objectives, the aim
was to create a cohesive and engaging learning experience for students while addressing different facets of the instructional
process.

o How did you plan for learner participation?

Group discussions foster collaborative learning, allowing students to share ideas, clarify concepts, and engage with diverse
perspectives and group work promotes participation as each student contributes to the collective creation, fostering
teamwork and shared responsibility. The exchange of the posters encourage students to actively engage with diverse
perspectives, expanding their understanding of different movies and characters. Self-directed activities like vocabulary
expansion promote individual engagement. Public speaking fosters participation and confidence, allowing students to share
their perspectives with their peers. Encouraging students to reflect on their experiences deepens their understanding and
involvement in the learning process. Therefore, all the activities that we used in our plans require learner participation.

o How did you plan for evaluation and revision? What is the rationale for choosing the measurement and evaluation
methods?

We planned the evaluation and revision part with differentiated instruction, peer tutoring and flexible grouping. The overall
rationale for our plan is to provide a comprehensive understanding of students' engagement, comprehension, and language
development throughout the unit.
