Self Awareness

Definition: Self-awareness represents the capacity of becoming the object of one’s own attention. In
this state one actively identifies, processes, and stores information about the self. (Duval & Wicklund,
1972)

WHO defines self-awareness- "includes our recognition of ourselves, our character, strengths,
weaknesses, desires and dislikes. It can help us to recognise when we are stressed or feel under
pressure. It is often a pre-requisite for effective communication, interpersonal relationship and
developing empathy for others.

Purpose:

1. Helping students develop a deeper understanding of their strengths, weaknesses, values,


beliefs, and promoting a better understanding of their identity and self-concept.
2. Enabling students to recognize and manage their emotions effectively in their daily life.
3. Enhancing students' self-regulation and decision making skills, help them build better
interpersonal relationships and enable them with goal setting skills.

Sample: Enhancing self awareness among 8th and 9th students which involves encouraging in
reflection of positive characteristics and to recognize their strengths and weaknesses. Improving the
students situational self awareness and self concept.
