HAMPI DOCUMENTATION

DAY 1 (6/10/2023)

(Afternoon Session)

The first activity that started the day was an exploration program of the temple premises, in which the stu-
dents indulged themselves to understand the whole spatial aspect and the planning of the place. The whole
experience challenged students to broaden their way of thinking while sticking to their way of analyzing
things from a simple point of view. It allowed the students to use their visual observation skills and rely main-
ly on the base to understand the whole process of making, planning, and the thoughts that came to them
while building this temple years ago.

From this, the students engaged in a discussion that allowed us to give our own thoughts and questions that
enabled us to explore more of what we know and don’t know about how we as designers analyze and observe
space and its function and motive. It requires multiple layers that encompass the natural, cultural, and archi-
tectural aspects. Diving deep into it, we got to learn more about other factors such as the user’s experience
with the time, the techniques, and the culture of the place.

(Evening session)

In the evening session, the students were divided into random groups to conduct on-site documentation and
measure a structure on the temple site. The exercise allowed the students to understand how a space comes
to factor with its surrounding context and the relationship between open and closed space. Every group were
assigned to do different works all focussing on the same structure. From there, we get to experience live site
documentation and the steps that come along with it. The instruments and methods of documenting it were
a unique experience where the students got to know more about the skills, requirements, and thought process
that came with it.
