1) Name and distinguish between the two broad subdivisions of geology. ?

R/ Geology is traditionally divided into two broad areas-physical and historical. Physical
geology examines the materials composing Earth and seeks to understand the many
processes that operate beneath and upon its surface. The aim of historical geology, on the
other hand, is to understand the origin of Earth and its development through time.
2) How old is Earth?

R/ 4.6 billion
3) Describe two principles used to develop the geologic time scale. ??

R/ Relative dating such as the law of superposition and the principle of fossil succession.
4) What is the difference between magma and lava ?

R/ magma is found underground while lava is found on the surface


5) What is the difference between Relative dating and absolute dating ?

R/ Relative dating means that events are placed in their proper sequence or order without
knowing their age in years but the absolute dating is determining the exact dates or age of an
event or object in relation to a specific timeline.
6) List and briefly describe Earth's four spheres.

R/ 1) The hydrosphere is a dynamic mass of water that is continually on the move, evaporating
from the oceans to the atmosphere, precipitating back to the land, and running back to the ocean
again.

2) Atmosphere : Earth is surrounded by a life-giving gaseous envelope called the atmosphere.

3) The biosphere includes all life on Earth.

4) Geosphere : Beneath the atmosphere and the oceans is the solid Earth.

7) Sketch and label a basic rock cycle. Make sure your sketch includes alternative paths.
