B.Sc. Honours (English) Part I Paper for English Semester-I (For Sessions 2021-22, 2022-23 and 2023-24) Time Allowed: 03 Hours Max. Marks: 100 Written Examination: 75 Marks Internal Assessment: 25 Marks Pass Marks: 40 (30+10) INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE PAPER -SETTER The question paper shall consist of three Units. Unit- shall be of 23 marks; Unit-II shall be of 22 marks; and Unit-III shall carry 30 marks and shall contain questions from the preceding Units, thus covering the entire syllabus, COURSE CONTENT The following texts are prescribed: () Prose Parables, Orient Blackswan Private Limited-2013. ‘The following six stories from this book are to be studied: 1 “Kabuliwallah” : Rabindranath Tagore 2, “The Eyes Are Not Here” : Ruskin Bond 3. “The Death of a Hero” : Jai Nimbkar 4. “Grief” : Anton Chekhov 5, 6. “Uncle Podger Hangs a Picture” : Jerome K. Jerome “The Doctor's Word” : R.K, Narayan (1) English Grammar in Use, Fourth Edition by Raymond Murphy. Cambridge University Press, 2017 The following units are to be studied: Units 1-37, 69-81 and Appendices | to 4. Additional exercises from the book that are relevant to the prescribed Units. TESTING UNIT-I 1. This question shall comprise of one essay type question with an internal altemative on theme, incident, character or main ideas from Prose Parables. The answer should be in about 400-450 words. 11 marks Il. This question shall comprise of four short-answer questions to be set from Prose Parables out of which the candidate shall attempt any three (in about 50-60 words each). 4x3=12 marks UNIT-IL ILL, (i) One passage of fen sentences to be translated from Punjabi into English . 10 marks (Gi) The candidate shall write the meaning and form sentences of (six out of eight) words selected from Prose Parables. 6x2=12 marks UNIT-I IV __ Four very short-answer questions to be set from Prose Parables be attempted in about 30-40 words. Each question shall carry 2 mar} 4x2=08 marks V. (i) Fifteen sentences each of one mark to be set from exercises of the prescribed units of English Grammar in Use out of which candidate shall attempt any 12 sentences. 12x] =12 marks (ii) Ten sentences to be set from the additional exercises relevant to the prescribed units of the book English Grammar in Use.
