AMSA Malaysia Newsletter 2014
Foreword from THE REGIONAL CHAIRPERSON

Greetings from AMSA Malaysia!

First and foremost, I would like to represent AMSA Malaysia to extend our heartfelt
gratitude for taking an interest in us and will continue supporting and dedicating your time to
make AMSA Malaysia heard. This has been the 3rd year of my participation in AMSA Malaysia’s
activities and AMSA Malaysia has been improving over the years. I was given the opportunity
to meet medical students from different universities and get to learn lots of skills which will be
beneficial throughout life through AMSA Malaysia.
For your information, AMSA Malaysia has been established in Malaysia in the 1980s and
it has gone a long way before blossoming in these recent years. It has indeed caught the
attention of many medical students in Malaysia. With its recent success in organizing AMSC
Malaysia 2013, it has brought the bridge between medical students of different universities
closer and made a huge mark in the history of AMSA Malaysia.
I believe I have learned a lot from AMSA Malaysia since embracing it when I was in Year
1. I learned a lot of social skills and nurtured my skills in organizing activities by participating in
programs organized by AMSA Malaysia. I also participated in AMSC Philippines 2012 and made
lots of friends from different countries and still keep in touch with them. We even contact each
other to plan meet-ups when we visit their country.
Last but not least, I hope that you will continue your dedication towards AMSA Malaysia
once you have joined AMSA Malaysia. AMSA Malaysia will not be success without the support
of you guys. With your commitment and dedication in making AMSA Malaysia better, I believe
that the name of AMSA Malaysia will continue to flourish and achieve greater heights. I would
also want to extend my gratitude and appreciation to the editorial board for coming out with
this volume of newsletter.

HISTORY OF AMSA MALAYSIA
Asian Medical Students' Association (AMSA) Malaysia is a non-profit and
non-political organization led by medical students, started its operation in The
National University of Malaysia (UKM) since year 1985.
AMSA was officially founded in Manila, Philippines in 1985 and from that
day has been an active, dynamic and exciting student-led, non-profit, non-
political organization. Having established AMSA Malaysia in year 1983, AMSA
Malaysia was one of the 6 funding members of AMSA International.

Professor Dato’ Dr Lokman Saim, the founder

of AMSA Malaysia re-capped the introduction of
AMSA into Malaysia during the recent interview,
“In the year 1980, medical students from Japan
joined students in Thailand in the very first Asian
medical Students’ Conference (AMSC) which was
held in Bangkok, Thailand. It was the first meeting of
its kind among medical students in Asia. In 1981,
Malaysia was also invited to the conference. Medical
students from UKM responded to the invitation and
participated in the event. I was one of the students who had the privilege to
participate in the event. 2 years later, UKM offered to organize the Asian
Medical Students’ Conference (AMSC) in 1983 with the theme “Drug Abuse”.
This was the first step in bringing AMSA to Malaysia.”
In present, AMSA Malaysia has also secured partnership from other
medical students’ associations from other universities in Malaysia such as
National University of Malaysia (UKM), Sabah University of Malaysia (UMS),
International Medical University (IMU), UCSI University, Putra University of
Malaysia (UPM), Monash University, Science University Of Malaysia (USM) and

On 21st of September 2013, AMSA IMU organized a health screening campaign in

collaboration with the IMU annual event, Chariofare. Our health screening campaign blood
pressure measurement, BMI measurement, blood glucose measurement, nutritional advice by
qualified Nutritionist and medical advice booth by doctors.
This health-screening project was held in IMU. Around 30 medical students were
recruited to help up in our booth. Training was given before the actual event to ensure all of us
have standardized skills to prevent any bias from happening. We started to set up our booth at
8am and everyone was ready at his or her booth at 9am. Throughout the whole event, there
were few ushers helped in ensuring the event was running smoothly.
Apart from the health screening activities, we also had health exhibitions on popular
lifestyle topics such as balanced diet, hypertension and diabetes, as we had discovered these
few issues are the main health issues faced by the Malaysia society nowadays. Several
students were stationed at the booth to provide a more detailed explanation for the public. If
they found that they unable to answer the questions, they will seek the help from the
professionals.
In general, our volunteers demonstrated effective communication and good
commitment working as a team in order to make this event a great success.

some of our volunteers went to door to door knocking to promote the health-screening event to the residents.
The questionnaire for registration includes their personal details, past medical history and family medical history.
After that, the residents were ushered to medical students from IMU who measured the residents’ blood
pressure, body mass index (BMI), and waist-hip ratio (WHR), as well as screened them for their blood glucose and
cholesterol level. In addition, we had student volunteers from Nutrition & Dietetics department to be there to
have questionnaire with the residents regarding to their diets. To conclude the health screening, there were 5
IMU doctors to provide consultation to those who needed further attention.
Apart from the health screening, we also had health exhibitions and videos focussing on popular lifestyle topics
such as smoking, hypertension and diabetes, as we had discovered during planning that such issues were
prominent in this particular group of people. Several students were stationed at the exhibition to further explain
the health information displayed and promote the awareness of health check up. In addition, goodies bags were
given out to the participants as tokens of appreciation.
As this project was held at a residential area, we sought to engage the children as well. Games encouraging a
healthy diet according to the food pyramid and activities such as healthy food choices colouring contest were
conducted with the children in an attempt to instil good lifestyle choices in them. The event ended at 2.00 p.m.
In general, we had received good response from the residents and approximately 133 residents participated in
this event. Our volunteers demonstrated effective communication and good commitment working as a team in

National Kidney Foundation Fundraising was held from 10am to 3pm for 3 days from 28 th
October 2013 to 30th October 2013 in International Medical University. Our objectives for this
event are to raise fund for National Kidney Foundation Malaysia and also to educate the public
about the preventive education and early detection of kidney diseases.

Before the fundraising event, we have made flyers and multiple announcements through social
media about the fundraising as early as a month before the event. We recruited volunteers for
the event to help out with promoting the fundraising as well as to educate the public. Besides
selling merchandises from National Kidney Foundation (NKF) such as kidney coinboxes, we
have also prepared brownies, homemade chocolate candies, kidney-themed T-shirts, badges
and more. Besides the fundraising, we have also prepared a mini exhibition where people can
find out information regarding kidney care and National Kidney Foundation Malaysia. We have
also made a game booth with prizes to attract students to the booth. As the event was held in
the atrium of the campus where students and staffs usually pass by, we received quite a good
response.

In overall, despite struggling during the preparation of the fundraising, the event was
considerably a success. We have successfully raised a total of RM600 for NKF and educate the
public about kidney health through this event.

The “PROJECT AID: Typhoon Haiyan” was an AMSA Malaysia initiative conducted by the semester 1
AMSA ambassadors of International Medical School (IMU). Over the course of two weeks, the
donation team went to individual lectures of the different medical, dental and health science
batches and personally collected the funds, and setting up donation booths and donation boxes in
the form of a humble biscuit tins around the IMU campus. Along the way, we educated them on the
paramount importance of monetary funds for the people in Haiyan instead clothing and food
donations. We started out with an aim to reach RM10000 as a school. Despite concurrent donation
drives under other organizations for the same cause, our enthusiasm and generosity of the givers
still managed to garner an impressive RM4400 as a school. Our efforts sparked the attention of
Professor Ong, (director of external affairs) as well as the person in charge for IMU healthcare who
proposed a collaboration of donation efforts between our sum and MERCY Malaysia and feature
this donation drive in the local newspapers.

AMSA Kick Off Introductory Night was organized by AMSA

USM in collaboration with Medical Science Society (MEDSOC)
on 22nd October 2012. The program was officiated by Dr Shaik
Farid Abdul Wahab, the advisor of AMSA USM.
Our main objective for AMSA Kick-Off Night is to broaden the student’s knowledge regarding to the
existence of AMSA and the role of students in participating in our activities. It is important for students to
clarify their doubts regarding to this
society tonight.
We were surprised and
delighted that many medical
students, regardless Year 1 to Year 5,
appeared that night. It was out of our
expectations and nevertheless gave
us a huge morale boost to give our
best introductory night to the
audience.
First of all, the president of AMSA 2012/2013 gave his speech, introducing and explaining the purposes
and goals of AMSA. Then, a video presentation and a short sketch made by our committee team were
presented to the audience, regarding healthy lifestyle and alittle only CPR. The audience enjoyed the
presentation very much as a huge applause was given at the
end of the show.
Finally, students were introduced in joining AMSA by
writing down their details at the reception. Their details
would be keyed in by AMSA committee to register them
online. For further enquiries, we have set a senior backup
team to further clarify the questions raised by the new
members of AMSA at the end of the registration.

As a conclusion, it was a productive night as the main

objectives had been achieved and most importantly
everyone had fun.

department USM. The lecture lasted for an hour and students were given refreshments during a
short break. At 10.30 a.m., there was a short lecture on the best practices in blood culture
collection and demonstration of venipuncture and blood culture by representatives of BMS
Diagnostics (M) Sdn. Bhd. All the student participated in trying out venipuncture and blood culture
collection using the correct techniques. Finally, we dismissed at 12.30 pm and each participant was
given a pocket guide for best practices in blood culture collection. The event concluded with
souvenir presenting to our guest.
As for AMSA USM members, this workshop had given us a good exposure to more
knowledge on blood culture and venipuncture. It was indeed a great experience gained.
On 31st October 2013, from 8.00 am –
12.00 pm, we held a talk in SRJK Chun Cheng, a
primary school in Kota Bahru to educate 80
Standard Six students on sex education.
We had divided the students into two
groups according to their gender for our talk.
This is to prevent any discomfort and disgrace
among the primary school students. In our talk,
we had included secondary sex characteristics
development, taking care of hygiene of the
reproductive organ, and also ways to protect
themselves from sexual harassments.
First of all, we introduced the physical
changes to a teenage girl’s body during secondary sex characteristics development. Besides, we showed and
explain to them the anatomy of female reproductive organ by using graphic (cartoon) illustrations and
anatomical model. Then we explained to them about menstruation and how to use sanitary pads, and also
how to dispose of them properly. We did a demonstration in front of them and asked the volunteered
students to repeat the demonstration too. Furthermore, we taught them how to respect different gender and
the ways to protect self from being discriminated, physical or mental violation from others. We reminded
them to say “No” to any physical contacts to their body without their consent.
Next, we introduced the physical changes to a teenage boy’s body during secondary sex
characteristics development. The anatomy of male reproductive organ is shown by using graphic illustrations.
We taught them how to clean the area of penis covered by the foreskin to ensure the hygiene of their
reproductive organ is taken care of. After that we explained to them about pregnancy.
For both of the groups, we explained both the anatomical, changes during puberty and information
about both sex to them to allow them to understand both gender better and avoid curiosity. Meanwhile, this
helped to prevent unwanted sexual abuse cases to happen.
By the end of our talk, we raised a number of questions to be answered by the floor. The students are
actively involved in our talk, demonstration and Q&A session.

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14. The
World Diabetes Day campaign is led by the International Diabetes
Federation (IDF) and its member associations. It engages millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and
awareness. World Diabetes Day was created in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health
Organization in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat that diabetes now poses. World
Diabetes Day became an official United Nations Day in 2007 with the passage of United Nation Resolution 61/225.
The campaign draws attention to issues of paramount importance to the diabetes world and keeps diabetes firmly in
the public spotlight.

Diabetes Education and Prevention is the World Diabetes Day theme for the period 2009-2013. In conjunction
of this theme, AMSA UPM organized our ever first AMSA UPM Diabetes Day. We have received great responds from
the public even though this is our first time organising it. There were 420 participants for the Diabetes 8km Run, 250

(AMSEP) Universiti Putra Malaysia had hosted
AMSEP Philippines from 26th April to 2nd May
2014. There were 19 committee members from UPM and 10 delegates from the Philippines that
participated this event. Throughout their stays here, we can really see that though we speak
differently, did things differently, and had varied races and beliefs, we ended up teaching each other
some of the greatest lessons in life through our shared experience just the same. After all, as one of
the organizing committee, I think it was truly a great platform for the medical students from these
two countries to build knowledge, action and friendship like what the AMSEP stand for.

Day 1:
After breakfast, we had our opening ceremony conducted in Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences
(FPSK), UPM to formally welcome all our beloved delegates. We had specially invited Lee Li Ting,

Hospital Serdang. Next, we continue with a PBL session conducted by our own committee members.
From the delegates’ feedback, they claimed that this session was a bit similar to their small group
discussion (SGD) and clinico-pathological conference (CPC), except it was more “benign.” After that, we
traveled to Dataran Merdeka or the Independence Square, Galeri Kuala Lumpur, National Textile
Museum and finally Bukit Bintang. After a simple yet delicious dinner, we visited Pavilion shopping

The workshop session began at 1.30pm. It began with a half an hour talk on tuberculosis, an important
infectious chronic disease especially in the Malaysian context. After that, participants were broken up
randomly into groups and a short ice-breaking session was held. The workshops were held in the form of

organizing committee planned stations based on Korean traditional games. Everyone had fun and the
event ended at 9.30pm.
We initially scheduled for one extra lecture entitled ‘Mental Health as a Chronic Condition’ to be given by
Mr. Paul Jambunathan, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist at Sunway Medical Centre. However, today was

PUBLIC HEALTH PROGRAMME

Themed ‘Unseen Danger’, the 2013 AMSA health day was successfully held on the 7 th of
December 2013 at Sekolah Agama Hidayatul Iman, Sg Jelok Kajang. In line with the upcoming pre-
EAMSC conference in Korea, the community starved off many challenges in making this program a
success. The committee members and runners involving medical students from UKM, IMU,UTAR
and Monash University arrived as early as 8.15 am to start off the day.
In the early morning, the Principal of the school was invited to give a opening speech for the
event's opening ceremony. The health campaign started at 8.45 am with the clinical screening booth
accepting participants to undergo a series of screening tests which included body mass index (BMI),
blood pressure, pulse rate, blood glucose and blood grouping. At the end of the screening, a
counseling session was provided to explain their results and clear their doubts. At the same time,
the participants were given pamphlets in order to understand more about diseases that people can
take primary prevention steps on such as Hypertension, Diabetes and obesity.
A booth with games conducted by our members had raised some excitement during this
program. The ‘aseptic technique’ booth was a new exposure techniques that can be highlighted for
children during the program while their parents were doing clinical screening. There was also
games that had raised some fun among children and participants which was "match it correctly" and
gifts were given in return for their great participation. As for all, crowd for this program was made
by children and their presence and participation cheered up the atmosphere.
Crowd slowly tapered as the lunch time was near. After some refreshment and rest, more
crowd came in the late afternoon. To further promote of the event, some members managed to go
house by house to remind and attract more people to come to this program. Runners and members
had also done their best to attract more people to come this program and people could increase
their awareness of silent disease such as Hypertension and Diabetes Mellitus.
We managed to invite Organ Transplant Centre and there was a good numbers of applicants
who were interested in signing up. They also provided pamphlets and books on explanation about
organ transplant and there was a representative from the centre helping out in explaining the
process of signing up for anyone who were interested.
In a nutshell, although it was a small scale campaign attracting around 50-100 people, our
campaign managed to achieve our objective.
ASIAN MEDICAL STUDENTS’ CONFERENCE (amsc)
malaysia 2013
It is an honor for Malaysia to host one of the greatest annual event of AMSA. It is the 34th Asian
Medical Students’ Conference (AMSC) Malaysia 2013. The great event happened from 3rd July 2013
to 10th July 2013, lasted for 8 days and 7 nights. This was not the first time Malaysia hosted such a
great event at international level, back in 2010, we hosted the East Asian Medical Students’
Conference (EAMSC). The conference was organized by medical students from medical universities,
namely The National University of Malaysia, International Medical University of Malaysia and Monash
University of Malaysia, Universities Tunku Abdul Rahman, Universiti Putra Malaysia and UCSI. The
total number of delegates is 427 from over 20 countries. The theme of the conference was ‘The
Incoming Tide of Community Medicine’ which objective is to create awareness among medical
students regarding the importance of primary health care . Every doctor has a societal responsibility in
the promotion of health and prevention of disease and injury among community in which they live.
The theme mainly focus on community health which is further subdivided into 4 sub-topics namely,
Maternal and Child care, Environmental Health, Occupational Safety and Health and Chronic Non-
Communicable Disease. Many academic activities such as lecture, symposium, workshop and
academic competitions were held through the conference as well as plenty of social and cultural
activities such as cultural night performance, sightseeing to local landmark and tourist hotspots,
nevertheless the delegates have the chance to try variety of local delights and authentic cuisine. The
accommodation of the conference is the 5-stars majestic hotel called The Palace of The Golden Horses
which is a lakeside hotel with breathtaking scenery and cozy hotel rooms.
The delegates were given a warm treat at the welcoming party in the very ballroom of the hotel
and ice-breaking session was a success. Not only attended lecture, delegates were divided into group
where they had discussion and group work among themselves to have a more practical experience. One
thing special about the theme is that delegates not only had activities in the urban area, but also the
sub urban area called ‘kampong’ area. During the visit to the sub-urb, delegates had the chances to ex-
perience and enjoy the life in typical ‘Kampung’ way. AMSC 2013 is also the first conference to organize
the International Medical Brainteaser which serves as a platform for friendly competition for delegates
on their medical knowledge. Not to forget the Personal and Professional Development seminar given by
Profesor Harlina from UKM on the topic ’How to become a 5-star medical students’.
To bring our local delights to a whole new level, we organized our very own Malaysian Street
Food Fiesta where a tableful of scrumptious and authentic Malaysian food became the dinner for all
delegates. To further enable delegates to understand our culture and tradition, we had prepared some
workshops such as the batik painting workshop, traditional costume workshop and etc. No conference
is complete without the visit to the famous landmark of the country, in AMSC 2013, we brought the del-
egates to visit the Petronas Twin Towers and Putrajaya which include a river cruise session and many
other tourist hotspots.
To complete the conference, we moved from Kuala Lumpur to Genting Highlands on day 7 of the
conference where we had the grand closing ceremony and party in the ballroom of First World Hotel.
The party was given the theme ‘Geeky and Nerdy’ and we had the chance to witness a variety of school
uniform and fashionable costume from different countries. The highlight of the night was the perfor-
mance from the group moderators whose performance was so entertaining and truly displayed their
potential beyond a medical students. Not only that, the organizing committee also gave a surprise to
the delegates by a flash mob performance. Some delegates decided to further extend their enjoyment
in Malaysia by joining the post-Conference Tour to Malacca, the UNESCO World Heritage Site and his-
torical cities of Malaysia.
In a nutshell, AMSC 2013 was a great success after years of preparation and could be one of the
best conference ever organized.
PUBLIC HEALTH PROGRAMME

AMSA Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) had organized a charity marathon (RUN FOR FUTURE) with

the president of the charity marathon. The run started approximately at 10.30am after the arrival of all
the participants.

There were two categories which are men and women categories. There was only one track which
was 7 km distance and two checkpoints along the track. All the finishing participants were provided
medals, certificates, goodie bags and food. Hampers were given to the top three winners from each
category. The gift was given by the president.
While waiting for the participants to reach the endpoint of the track, the families and friends of
them visited those MAKNA and NKF booths. The volunteers explained the aims and importance of the non
-governmental organization (NGO).

In addition, through this charity marathon, we could grow a good relationship among the committee
members of AMSA from different universities. Organizing this program was a golden opportunity for
medical students like us to improve our leadership and communication skills. Besides that, we successfully
achieved our main objective which was to raise fund for the needy children. We hope more charity
programs will be held to lend a hand for those who need help.
