Garrett Augustus Morgan was born on 4th March 1877 in Kentucky (USA) and died on 27th
August 1963 in Cleveland, Ohio (USA). He was an African-American inventor. His inventions made
people’s lives safer and more convenient. In 1877, Garrett A. Morgan was born to a poor African-
American family. When he was 14 he left school and went to work. He didn’t have much education
but he was very imaginative. He taught everything himself. Morgan worked in a sewing machine shop.
He got interested in machines. He always looked for better ways to do things. In 1901, Morgan
invented a special belt for sewing machines. He sold the idea for $150. But this was only the
beginning. Morgan invented many things. In 1914, Morgan invented a helmet to protect miners and
firefighters from smoke and gas. He won a gold medal for this invention.
Morgan looked for other problems to solve. Cars were very popular in the USA at that time.
The streets were crowded with cars, so there were many accidents. Morgan had an idea about a light
at each street comer. The light tells the cars to stop or go. He invented a timer that automatically
changed the light. Cities all over the country wanted to have Morgan’s traffic lights but he couldn’t
produce enough of them. In the 1920s, he sold his invention to the General Electric Company and got
$40,000. This was a large amount of money for that time.

Victor Vu’s drama Dear Brother (Toi thay hoa vang tren co xanh) was a rare phenomenon in
Vietnamese film history. As an adaptation of Nguyen Nhat Anh’s famous novel, the movie grossed $1
million from 350,000 admissions nationwide in its opening week, the third biggest opening ever in
Viet Nam. It was ranked as one of the highest grossing local films ever, earning over US$3.6 million in
total. The film depicted the challenges and jealousies of a 12-year-old boy towards his younger
brother. However, by the end of the film, he realized the true meaning of brotherhood. Despite the
fact that Vietnamese audiences often pay much attention to international movies rather than local
ones, this film was a huge success. This was partly thanks to its incredibly poetic trailer, engaging the
audience with the beautiful landscape of a Vietnamese province and their childhood memories.
Statements True (T) False (F)
1. Dear Brother grossed $ 1 million in its opening week.
2. The film is about a 12-year-old boy and his younger sister.

History of Cinematography
Cinema is much younger than theatre. It was born at the end of the 19th century. The first people
who showed the first movies to a paying public were the Lumiere Brothers of France. They did this on
the 20th February 1896 at the Grand Cafe, Boulevard des Capucines, Paris. This was the first cinema
show and it was quickly followed by many others in all parts of the world. In 1996, we celebrated the
hundredth anniversary of cinematography.
The first films showed moving people and transport or newsreels of processions and wars, and
short comedies. In 1901 France was the first country to produce a dramatic film, The Story of a Crime,
which was followed by The Great Train Robbery in the United States in 1903.
At first, films were shown anywhere: in music halls, clubs and shops. In 1908, special film
theatres were built to give regular programmes. At this time cinema rapidly developed in both the
New and the Old World. Charlie Chaplin made his first film, Making a living, in 1914 in the USA. At that
time the world was crazy about Charlie, which was created by Charlie Spencer Chaplin. His Charlie,

35
small and clumsy yet kind-hearted, generous and brave, has attracted the hearts of simple people in
different countries. Sometimes they stood in long queues to see a film with their favourite actor. The
first films in the West were mainly melodramas or comedies.
Then, in 1927, Warner Brothers in Hollywood made the first film in which an actor sang and
spoke. The film was called Jazz Singer. It opened a new era in films - the era of the “talkies”. The film
mostly told its story with titles, but it had three songs and a short dialogue. There were long lines of
people in front of the Warner Theatre in New York. The silent film was dead within a year. The first
one hundred percent sound film, “Lights of New York”, appeared in 1928.
The first colour films were made in the 1930s, but the black-and-white films are made even
today.

available used powers essential into
Energy is the ability to do work. We use energy every day in many different ways. It is (1)
____________ for our lives. The gas we use to make a cup of coffee for breakfast is energy, the petrol

77
in the bus that brings us to school is energy, the electricity that we use to give us light is energy, the
battery that (2) ____________ our mobile phone is energy. So, where does this energy come from?
Sources of energy are divided (3) ____________ 2 groups: Renewable energy and Nonrenewable
energy. Renewable energy is a source which can be replenished and is always (4) ____________. It
continues to be available for use by humans indefinitely. In contrast, non-renewable energy is a
source which cannot be replenished and eventually it will be (5) ____________ up. It disappears after
each use and can’t be used again.
Exercise 2. Read the passage, then tick True (T) or False (F).
Alternative Energy
Wind energy is a good example of renewable energy. It is the transformation of wind energy
into electricity, using wind turbines. Wind turbines are normally grouped together in windy locations
to form wind farms. Nowadays, many countries are developing wind energy, in fact the electricity
produced by wind power has increased by more than 40% in recent years. This production only
represents 1% of world-wide electricity use. The world’s largest offshore wind turbines are in Great
Britain. The turbines are 70 metres high and provide electricity for 3,000 houses.
Statements True (T) False (F)
1. Wind energy is an example of non-renewable energy.
2. A few countries are developing wind energy.
3. The electricity produced by wind power has decreased by more
than 40% in recent years.
4. The world’s largest offshore wind turbines are in Great Britain.
5. The turbines in Great Britain provide electricity for 3,000
houses.
Exercise 3. Read the text carefully then answer the following questions.
Energy is one of the most basic parts of our universe. The word energy comes from the Greek
word “energia”, meaning “at work”. Thus, energy means “the ability to do work”.
We use energy in everything. It lights and warms our homes, offices, streets, etc. It also cooks
our food, plays our music, washes our clothes, and gives US pictures on the television. Household
chores become easy with energy.
You can visit your favourite places with energy, too. Our vehicles, trains, planes, and rockets are
powered by energy. It also powers machines in factories and tractors on a farm.
Our main source of energy is the sun. The sun gives US light during the day. It dries our clothes
when they’re hanging outside on a clothesline. It helps plants grow. When animals eat the plants, the

78
energy is transferred to their bodies, so they are able to move and do work. Our bodies changed the
stored energy of the food into the energy to do work. We use this energy for walking, running,
reading, etc. How important energy is!

Air-travel is the most modem form of public transport and it was developed in the 20 th century.
It is also extremely expensive to set up air-travel facilities. Millions of people use airplanes for a
variety of reasons. Some travel for business, others go on holiday by air and others use cargo planes
to move their products from country to country very quickly. Some courier companies now have their
own fleet of planes ready to carry parcels and post more efficiently. There are different types of
passenger services - some are cheap and provide a ‘no-frills’ service which is good for short journeys.
Other airlines provide passengers with a luxurious flying experience. Ail-ports are getting busier and it
is evident that more passengers and businesses than ever are using airplanes to get to their
destinations.

Smart Roads
Over a million people a year are killed in road traffic accidents, with tens of millions more
injured. The emergence of smart roads connected to the internet of things (IoT) can significantly help
to reduce road deaths, as IoT-enabled road sensors can instantly communicate with smart cars about
the best ways to avoid hazards or adverse road conditions.
A Portuguese scheme, co-funded by the European Union, is set to create around 1,000 kilometres
of smart roads in the country. This programme will see a series of cutting-edge transportation
technologies installed on the route, facilitating wireless communication between road-based
infrastructure nodes and smart cars.
It’s not just safety issues that technologically-enabled roads can help address, with Sweden
recently completing a pilot project that saw two kilometres of road transformed into an electrified
track that recharges modes of transport, such as electric cars and trucks while they drive. In the
future, wireless battery chargers will be found underneath roads, helping to reduce the level of air
pollution and virtually eliminating the need for fossil fuels to power cars.

Canada referred to the part of New France and at the end, it became a possession of the
British Empire. Archeological and genetic studies say that 26500 years ago, Canada was populated by
aboriginal peoples. European colonisation started about 1497, and for many years, it was ruled by
New France and after by the British Empire. Because Britain still maintained control of Canada, it was

Ireland is the name of an island. It is next to the islands of Britain. There are two parts of

107
Ireland: Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom, and the Republic of Ireland is a different
country. Everywhere in Ireland you will see green, in fact Ireland’s other name is ‘the Emerald Isle’.
Green is one of the symbols of Ireland and everybody wears green on Saint Patrick’s Day, the Irish
national holiday.
The most famous symbol of Ireland is the shamrock. It became a symbol because it grows in
many places - and it has three leaves. The number three is very special for Irish people - some even
believe it is magic.
Another Irish symbol is the harp, and two other traditional instruments are the bagpipes and the
fiddle (‘fiddle’ is another word for ‘violin’) The Irish are famous for their playing, singing and dancing.
Leprechauns are Irish fairies. They are shoemakers, and they are not very friendly. They also have
secret pots of gold. If you find a leprechaun, you can look for his gold, but don’t look away from the
leprechaun. If you do, he will disappear - and so will the gold! Of course, this is only a superstition.

The idea of a driverless car is not new. Now there are already cars on the road that can park
themselves. But a truly self-driving car, one that can drive itself, is being tested by scientists and
engineers. Self-driving cars have already been tested on public roads. These cars not only record
images of the road, but their computerized maps view road signs, find alternative routes and see
traffic lights even before they are seen by a person. By using radars and cameras, the cars can analyse
information about their surroundings faster than a human can. In some of the tests, the car learns the
details of a road by driving on it several times, and when it is time to drive itself, it can identify when
there are pedestrians crossing and then stops to let them pass by. Self-driving cars could make
transport safer for all of us by eliminating the cause of most of today’s accidents. Although self-driving
cars may seem far off, some people believe that there will be driverless cars in showrooms in about
10 years.
Statements True (T) False (F)
1. There are already cars on the road.
2. These cars can only record images of the road.
3. The cars use radars and cameras to analyse information about their
surroundings very fast.
4. Self-driving cars can’t make transport safer.

Exercise 10. Read the passage and choose the best answers.
Solar Energy
Sunlight carries huge amounts of energy. You can feel the Sun’s energy when sunlight warms
your skin on a summer day. To capture the Sun’s energy, scientists have developed solar cells, called
photovoltaic cells. These cells convert sunlight into electricity.
When sunlight hits a solar cell, some of the light energy is absorbed. This light energy causes
the particles to move faster, and the movement of these particles creates electricity.
In some places, large panels of solar cells harvest sunshine to make electricity for homes and
businesses. Solar cells have been placed on cars and appliances, too. Since the Sun sends abundant
free energy streaming day toward Earth 24 hours a day, people in many parts of the world, not just
the sunniest places, have fixed solar cells and solar panels on the roofs of their houses or businesses
to lower their energy costs.
Experts say that the huge installation of solar panels in sunny regions could generate enough

116
electricity to supply an entire country. Capturing this energy can help overcome our diminishing
energy to maximize efficiency. New ways to capture this energy are being developed to maximize
efficiency.
