Abstract
River Kosi, also called as the sorrow of Bihar is notorious for flood. It causes

devastating flood killing thousands of life and destroying property in billions. Many
steps taken by the government to control the flood of the Kosi River has been
unsuccessful, as the river is known for changing its course. In 2008, the River Kosi
completely changed its course inundating areas which was supposed to be safe from
floods. The flood of 2008 killed more than 50 thousand people and many more
became homeless. In this scenario, it becomes imperative to map the areas which are
susceptible to being flood by the river, as it people of the area can take necessary steps
to counter the flood and government can adopt protective methods to minimize the
damage to areas which are prone to flooding. The current study uses satellite data to
delineate areas which were flooded in 2008 and makes use of SRTM DEM to map the
topography of the region and find the areas which can be prone to flood in future.
