and it effected to all aspects since 90% of students (250 students) were
full scholarship receipts and the salary of lecturer relied on church
support. This experience was so bad that, in turn, created a tension
between the school and the church and among students who were
majority supporting us and accused of some student who secretly made
gossip about the school. I was informed that senior pastor was not
happy and would remain of keeping not support financially and threat to
close the school. At last, I resigned from the school.
Given this situation, I begun to set up the data and planned the
programs. I sent a registration form to be filled it out by schools to have
me the update of the schools. The second, I issued the certificate of
registration. Third, I published a Pentecostal journal of theology,
Pneumatikos. Fourth, run annual meeting of theological seminaries and
bible school leaders. Fifth, conduct an annual theological forum. And so
on and so on. But the good idea and motive are not always welcomed.
Many schools have a lack of response and don’t even take into account
seriously that matter. The fact is the government acknowledges IPFC as
a responsible organization to manage the harmony of Pentecostal
churches and schools. This is a big challenge for my leadership as I
notice less participation and even for some no response at all either
participating events or supporting financially.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Junifrius Gultom
How much power and authority do they seem to have in determining what
happens in this part of the service?
-Our former Senior Pastor who had a broad and tender heart. Though
he had power, he had been exercising a servanthood leadership style that
would give chance for any trained ministers to lead the service, including
the Sunday preaching.
Who seem to have the ultimate control? How would you describe their
exercise of this leadership?
-In our church, Senior Pastor is the one who has “passive” ultimate
control since Our church has assigned a worship service responsible team
of 5-10 ministers (mostly lay ministers) under 1 associate pastor
leadership. Our church has 5 time-Sunday worship services (06.00am,
9.00am, 11.00am, 03.00pm, and 5.00pm. Every service is supervised by the
team.
How is their leadership informed and shaped by the followers and the
situation?

I have a burden—as I have been doing since 1999—to train and equip as
many as Christian leaders who have less opportunity in education and less
advantageous in Christian public sphere. Priority will be given to those who serve in
remotes areas across Indonesia by a regular and systematic training of Biblical
knowledge and current issues in life and ministry.
But before those above goals will be worked out to reach, I have a desire of
having a cross-cultural teaching and ministry experience. But for that, I want to have
a doctorate degree from Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary, Korea.

BOOKS REPORT
Author & Book: Henri Nouwen, In the Name of Jesus; Reflections on Christian
Leadership (New York: Crossroad, 1989),
1. Insight 1
2. Insight 2
Provoking question to be contemplated:
“Do you love me?” He distinguishes the first love, the love of God and the
second love, the rest of love. He believes to know the heart of Jesus is the
same with loving him. This is continued to the discipline of contemplative
prayer. The Christian leader must have the ability to dwell in the presence of
God so that they can keep the intimacy with God in the midst of the world
where to be relevant is the theme.
3. Insight 3
His second temptation is to be spectacular. The hidden desire under this
temptation is to be an individual hero. Nouwen points out the problem of
individualism that becomes dominant in this century and brings the readers to
the light of communal and mutual life and ministry. He breaks the fantasy of
being super-individual to where this competitive world drives people. He
confesses how his life was all about being alone to become capable in
everything and shares the communal experience with the broken and
wounded people in the community.
4. Insight 4
The world says, 'When you were young you were dependent and could not go
where you wanted, but when you grow old you will be able to make your own
decisions, go your own way, and control your own destiny.' But Jesus has a
different vision of maturity: It is the ability and willingness to be led where you
would rather not go."

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Junifrius Gultom
Here we touch the most important quality of Christian leadership in the future.
It is not a leadership of power and control, but a leadership of powerlessness
and humility.
Though it does not provide a manual with numbered practical advices, it invites me
back to the core of the leadership, the heart of Jesus. At the same time, his unique
setting, a community for mentally challenged people, will be a reflection for me to
learn about being a leader means also to be ready for leaving the comfort zone. It fits
with my personality as I always like to have an adventure in my leadership. Many
times, I find myself to feel guilt at staying in a comfort zone and being challenged to
take a risk in order to develop my desire to its maximum potential
Insight no. 1. The first issue that Nouwen addressed is relevance. Nouwen offers a
helpful corrective to my frequent obsession with relevance, suggesting that I need to
make sure that my pursuit of relevance is subservient to my pursuit of God. On page
24, he says, "The question is not: How many people take you seriously? How much
are you going to accomplish? Can you show some results? But: Are you in love with
Jesus?...Do you know the incarnate God?" That is a message that I continually need
to hear, so that I keep focused on the most important thing of knowing God while
continuing to give appropriate attention to the less important things like relevance.
Author & Book: J. Robert Clinton, the Making of a Leader (Colorado: Navpress,
1988),
2. Insight 2
The Deepening Lessons: Life Maturing Processes
Throughout a leader’s life, God works to deepen character as well as to
develop ministry skills. God works on foundational character development
(primarily integrity) through integrity checks, obedience checks, and word
checks.
Some of events on this subject are isolation, conflict and life crisis.
3. Insight 3
Leadership Backlash
A leader experiencing leadership backlash learns through conflict with others
to submit to God in a deeper way.
A normal pattern for leadership backlash:
1. The leader gets a vision (direction) from God.
2. The followers are convinced of the direction.
3. The group moves in the direction given.
4. The group experiences persecution, hard times, or attacks from Satan –
spiritual warfare is common.
5. There is backlash from the group.
6. The leader is driven to God to seek affirmation in spite of the action's
ramifications.
7. God reveals Himself further: who He is, what He intends to do.
8. God vindicates Himself and the leader.
4. Insight 4
Ministry philosophy is the result of leadership development – the ideas,
values, and principles whether implicit or explicit that a leader uses as
guideline for decision making, for exercising influence, or for evaluating
ministry.
A growing awareness of one’s ministry philosophy leads to more effective
leadership.
Leaders must develop a ministry philosophy that simultaneously honors
biblical leadership values, embraces the challenges of the times in which they
live, and fits their unique gifts and personal development if they expect to be
productive over a whole lifetime.
Insight no. 2.
-What the insight really means?
It means that it is a must-faced-by-leader law! The quality of character of a leader—
of his motivation, vision. passion, etc—could be measure when he is under though
situation. History has proved as well as well the Bible, every leader would face a
process to make his foundation solid and much more fruitful by deep processing.
This is not easy one since often unexpected, great tribulation, opposition and subtle
temptation.
14
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT Junifrius Gultom
I will use this for others as I have a change to teach on leadership to Christian
leaders or potential leaders and to my future students. I will encourage them to learn
about dealing with those challenges and be faithful to work in the times of deep
processing
Insight no.4.
-What the insight really means?
Many people do ministry without a clear foundation values and principles as a
guidance to achieve their goals. Or if they do have such philosophy of ministry, only
imitate from a secular ones. Robert Clinton stated very clearly that we need a
balance from the bible and from challenges of times as well. Formulating the
philosophy of ministry helps to have a map to arrange mission statement and steps
to get them done.
-Why this is important to me and how I am going to use to me and to others?
This is very important to me to work more effectively and to give me a clear picture
what life and ministry I should live in. I am very much concern on doing things with a
accountability to man and to God according to what he wants me to do and to be.
After finishing my study, whenever God wants me to found a new ministry, I will
establish first the philosophy of ministry by using what criteria set by Clinton. This is
to also show people that we are working for simply to do the list and routine
activities. I will share this to as many as leaders possible and help them to formulate
their philosophy of ministry according to their context and passion.
