FUN FACT The first mention of vampires in the Crescent City comes
from the “Casket Girls” of the 1700s. These women were shipped
from France to marry colonists, and arrived pale and gaunt with
only wooden trunks called “casquettes.” The ladies were housed
with the sisters in the Ursuline convent. Legend says the nuns opened
the trunks, which had been locked on the third floor, and found them
empty, fueling rumors the girls were actually vampires.

n May 2022, thousands of
costumed fans—1,369 to be
exact—gathered in Whitby,
England, to set a world record
for the most people dressed
as vampires. It was just one of
multiple events around the world to
celebrate the 125th anniversary of the
release of Bram Stoker’s Dracula—
the novel that introduced the world
to the infamous count, and set the
standard by which all vamp stories
are still judged to this day.
Through letters, journal entries
and telegrams, Stoker’s book
tells the story of the mysterious
Transylvanian nobleman and those
whose lives he forever changes,
including lawyer Jonathan Hawker,
Hawker’s wife, Mina, and her
“sleepwalking” friend Lucy, as well
Abraham Van Helsing, the most
famous vampire hunter of all time. Count Dracula is so ingrained in the collective consciousness, even stories aimed at kids reference it, like

In 1931, after filming wrapped
for the day on Dracula starring
Bela Lugosi, a different cast and
crew would arrive on the set to
reshoot the movie in Spanish.
Carlos Villarías played the titular
bloodsucking count and Lupita
Tovar his victim (pictured).
Though it was a financial flop, a
number of critics preferred the
Spanish version, and in 2015, the
Library of Congress selected it
for the National Film Registry.
