Purpose:

1) Develop an understanding of determining the mass by difference


2) Read a scale
3) Calculate the Percent of sugar in a sample of gum

Materials:

Quad beam balance

Sample of gum

Procedure:

1) Zero the Quad-Beam balance.


2) Determine the mass of the sample of gum and wrapper. Enter this value in the data table.
3) Remove the gum from the wrapper and begin chewing it.
4) Determine the mass of the wrapper. (DO NOT THROWAWAY THE WRAPPER) Write this

5) After all of the sugar and flavouring has been removed from the sample of gum, place the gum
back in the wrapper.
6) Determine the mass of the post chewed gum and wrapper. Enter this value into the data table.
