Narrative Tenses

Often when you write, you would what to describe a story based on past events. You will most likely be
using the narrative tenses, which encompasses the 4 different types of tenses commonly used in narrative
writing. Here’s how:
1.We use past simple in the first/ introductory sentence to introduce our topic.
Example: I visited my grandmother last week.

2. Past continuous is used as background information, It shows an action that started before the event
happened and was in progress.
Example: What were you bringing to your grandmother’s house?

3.We use past perfect simple or past perfect continuous to explain the actions that happened before in the
main event, if it was done or has been continuing for a certain period.
Example: I had been giving them oranges every time, I visited her she had finished it on that day we gave
her.
