QUARTER 1 – WEEK 1

FORCE
What is FORCE?

 A force is a push or pull upon an object resulting from the object's

interaction with another object. Its specific unit is called newton(N),
which is an SI (System International) unit of force.
 A newton is the force required to give 1- kg mass an acceleration of
1m/s2.

1N=1kg.m/s2
To accurately describe the forces acting on an object, let
us examine the figure below

The figure shows how force acts on a ball, but you need to
be familiar with the following terms:

1. MAGNITUDE
2. DIRECTION
3. POINT OF APPLICATION
4. LINE OF ACTION

To describe a force, two things must be considered; the magnitude and the direction
of the force.
THERE ARE DIFFERENT FORCES THAT WILL BE
ENCOUNTERED AS YOU INVESTIGATE THE
RELATIONSHIP OF FORCE AND MASS TO THE

Forces occur in pairs and can be
either balanced or unbalanced.

 Balanced Forces
 Forces that do not cause
change in motion. They are
equal in size and opposite in
direction. When balanced
forces act on an object at
rest, the object will not
move.
 Unbalanced Forces
 Forces that always cause a change in
the motion of an object. They are not
equal nor opposite. When two
unbalanced forces are exerted in
opposite directions, their combined
force is equal to the difference
between the two forces and is exerted
in the direction of the larger/greater
force.
Net or Resultant Force

 Netforce or  When an object is at rest, a

zero net force would make
resultant force is the object remains at rest.
the sum of all  Moreover, when the object
is moving, a zero net force
forces acting on would make the object
an object. maintain its velocity at a
given time interval.
 On the other hand, when
the net force is not zero, the
object’s velocity will change.
A net force exerted to an
object at rest may cause the
object to move.
