MELT 207: Innovative Approaches and Methods in Language Teaching

Activity 1: REFLECTION

Based on my understanding with the preceding discussion, Innovative Teaching creates an

environment active participation, develop communication skills and critical thinking skills, help
learners stimulate learning and encourage life-long learning.

There are various innovative approaches and methods used in language teaching. These are
Communicative Language Teaching, Task based approach, Content Based, Instruction, Blended
learning, Gamification, Project Based Learning and Multimodal approach. And these approaches
have seven goals.

These are the following:

1. Promote communication skills- which are highlighting the importance of interaction with
other learners to gain more understanding of the language use.
2. Enhance language learning- Language learning is not only centered in vocabulary and
grammar but also focuses in the capacity of an individual to learn to acquire,
comprehend, and meaningfully utilize the language specifically in the form of
communication.
3. Foster language proficiency- It implies that the learner must exude abilities to meet a
level of accuracy in language through comprehension and production of it.
4. Promote lifelong learning- Encouraging lifelong learning is allowing students to
comfortable learn that they will be able to voluntarily and continuously seek knowledge
in their own without being restrained by the planted textual rules.
5. Differentiated instructions- Different approaches are being identified for the teachers to
utilize based on her/his observation on the needs and preferences of the learners.
6. Cultural awareness- Language is the soul and reflection of various cultural backgrounds,
traditions and histories, and by learning it, the students must duly pay respect to the
cultures to fully comprehend and acquire the language.
7. Develop critical thinking skills- It is a highly complex skill that involves the process of
observation, analysis, interpretation, reflection, evaluation and good decision making to
effectively solve a problem or narrowed down a certain scenario.
