Tok in Cultural Anthropology : Ethnographic Thought Experiment

Imagine you are an anthropological team wanting to conduct ethnographic research on

group such as in the photos below!
Writing the Culture of the « Other »

1) Pick a group whose culture you want to know! What do you want to know? Consider
your scope. Write a ‘headline grabbing title’ and a proposed research question that your
research will seek to answer.
2) Consider the challenges and practical concerns of conducting your field research? (i.e.
where exactly, your group’s identity, time spent, money needed, how you will meet and
integrate into the group)
3) Consider your perspective: what will it be regarding a) ‘etic vs. emic’ approaches, b)
an emphasis on ‘nature vs. nurture’ and c) the “experiential/interpretative vs.
structural/material” aspects that determine culture? Why in each case?
4) What specific methods do you plan to employ in obtaining your data? How will urban
and/or global influences factor into your research?
5) Outline how you will use technology in your research? How will that affect the
knowing processes?
6) What knowledge issues/questions do you see as pertinent to your research processes
and results?
7) How important is “structural violence” (i.e poverty, racism, marginalization) to your
culture group and to your ethnography of their culture?
