How to Write in Nutrition:

Writing in nutrition and health is different than writing in English or science. Be sure to fully read the
question, look at how much the question is worth, and talk about yourself.

 Talk about yourself using the word ‘I’

 Relate your response to yourself and theory learned in class

 Give specific examples using Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How:

o When talking about eating, state what you ate (i.e, what type of junk food or health
food), how much you ate, etc.

o When using the words ‘more’, ‘healthier’, ‘better’, explain what you mean by giving an
example.

Here are some examples that are not specific and examples that are specific:

Example #1: I eat healthy. THIS IS NOT A SPECIFIC EXAMPLE!

A healthy lifestyle choice that I make is bringing three snacks to school with me each day. Some
examples of these snacks are apples, nuts, granola bars, yogurt, or cucumbers. I bring these snacks so
that if I am hungry, I have a healthy choice with me, and I can avoid getting a bag of chips from the
vending machine. THIS IS A SPECIFIC EXAMPLE!

Example #2: I get enough sleep. THIS IS NOT A SPECIFIC EXAMPLE!

I get 7-8 hours of sleep every night. I got to bed at midnight and wake up between 7:00 and 8:00 in the
morning each day. THIS IS A SPECIFIC EXAMPLE!

REMEMBER: You will get much more out of this course if you are honest! I will never grade you based
on the quality of your eating and lifestyle habits (or judge you!) I grade you based on your analysis and
reflection. It does not matter if you have the least healthy eating habits as long as you can recognize
that and use the course material to come up with some better options. So, answer questions honestly
and take this time to reflect and make some changes!
