As a teenager, like many others, I use the internet a lot.

my life these days is pretty much

intertwined with the internet. I think, the internet is like a double-edged sword. On one hand, it gives
us access to a ton of information, but on the other hand, it also exposes us to the risk of data theft. In
2023 I see a million cases of data theft in my country. However, this is not only happened in 2023,
But this issue has becomes a hot topic every year and I realize that this is a serious issue that must be
addressed promptly. In this context, the quote from Edward Snowden, "Privacy is a human right. It is
the foundation of freedom," provides a strong philosophical foundation. Human rights underscore
that privacy is not merely a right but rather the cornerstone of individual freedom. In this digital era,
the security of personal data becomes a representation of that right. Data theft constitutes a
violation of fundamental human rights, as it deprives individuals of freedom and control over their
own information.

Recently my friend told me about a website called "Have I Been Pwned," and surprisingly, I
discovered that my data had been compromised. Reflecting on myself, I found that the passwords I
made were too weak and I think this is also a problem for some people out there. To prove this, I
created a kind of simulation. I asked some friends to voluntarily create new emails specifically for the
purpose of being hacked. When I attempted to hack them, I could guess some words in their
passwords. This shows that the passwords they created were weak. Even someone like me, who is
not an expert, could guesses their passwords. Just imagine if a professional tried to hack your
accounts. To address this, we can change our passwords with random character combinations and
update them every month, We can also use MFA to enhance the security.

The Indonesian society is known for its low literacy rate, resulting in poor dissemination of
the risks of data theft and preventive measures. People are generally unaware of the importance of
protecting their personal data online. Due to the lack of awareness among the public, there is an
indifference towards this issue, and it is often perceived as trivial. Often, individuals in Indonesia may
not be very concerned or hastily agree to privacy policies without reading them. We should better
understand how our data will be. If privacy policies are neglected, we might not realize the potential
risks of data theft or misuse of personal information. In my opinion, the time required to read an
app's privacy policy is actually relatively short compared to the potential risk of our data being
stolen.
