This is an overview of different art styles in the Philippines, including prehistoric art, indigenous and folk
art, religious and secular art, romantic realism, abstraction and modernism, social realism, and magic
realism. It explores the characteristics and examples of each style.

Prehistoric Art – Angono Petroglyphs (Cave painting found in Rizal province)

Indigenous Art – art by the indigenous people and ethnic groups; expressions of religious belief and used
for rituals and ceremonies

Christian Philippine Art – works of sculpture and paintings that have developed after the introduction of
the Christian religion by the Spaniards

Secular Art – art that originated outside the confines of the Spanish Christian Church, mostly meant for
the illustrado class

Romantic Realism – shows an aspect of beauty; subjects are the idyllic and exotic rural sceneries

Modernism – Western Art and interpreted it in the local contexts in terms of the subjects as well as
artistic forms

Social Realism – the art that depicted the social reality in the country during the Martial Law years

Magic Realism – subjects are taken from the everyday lives of people; suggest a fascination with the
ordinary
