    The song describes a whaling ship called the Billy of Tea that sets out to sea to hunt whales. They hope that the Wellerman supply ship will soon arrive to bring them rum, tea, and sugar. After two weeks at sea, they spot a whale and engage it in a battle, but eventually the whale breaks free of the ropes and drags their ship behind it. They lose most of their supplies and equipment over several days of being dragged through the ocean by the whale. Eventually the line connecting them to the whale snaps and they are freed, but they are low on supplies and must now wait for the arrival of the Wellerman to bring them more rum, tea, and sugar
