Chemical coordination in plants
Directional stimuli: stimuli that act in a particular direction
The stimuli that act on plants:
- Light
- Gravity
The shoot grows towards light because it needs light to carry out photosynthesis
In most species, a positive phototropism is the strongest tropic response of the shoot.
It ensures that the leaves, held out at an angle to the stem, will receive the maximum amount of
sunlight: can be shown through a source of unidirectional light
In darkness or uniform light, the shoot shows a negative geotropism.
This is so the roots of plants grow down into the soil, where they can reach water and mineral
ions.
Roots also fix a plant firmly in place- provide anchorage
Most roots don't respond to directional light at all
