Movie Review (Uncle Drew)

Uncle Drew is an American sports comedy film that was aired in 2018. It was written by
Jay Longino and directed by Charles Stone III. The main actor in the movie is Kyrie Irving, he
portrayed the role of Uncle Drew. Kyrie himself made the character for Pepsi Max
advertisements that first aired in 2012. He says that he got the idea for the Uncle Drew
character after watching a YouTube video where an old man shows off at a skate park. The
movie established its credibility as a comedy with plenty of basketball in-jokes that made it
popular for basketball players and even to non-players.

The movie “Uncle Drew” is a story of an old gang slowly coming together, packing in
more septuagenarians to Drew’s shiny orange van and embarking on a road trip to prove that a
group of old dude can still win the big one. Considering both its comedic and athletic roster,
“Uncle Drew” has a cast of all-stars, and the script will leave you wishing they did so much more
with everybody. For one, these athletes don’t seem to have just walked on set after getting
hours of make-up—they’ve constructed physical tics and gravely voices for their elderly
characters.
Watching the movie made me laugh, not just because of their granny looks but because
of their silliness, the inside jokes, and my favorite, the time they show off their moves at the
club. In addition, the movie packs an excitement with the actual gameplay in third act, as there
is some dazzle when players like Irving can show off their skills with ball control and slam dunks,
like stunt-men who have perfected some unbelievable tricks. This movie is now one of my
favorite comedic and athletic film.

“Uncle Drew” is indeed a great movie, it made us laugh and understand the life of
septuagenarians. Although watching this feels like a funny feature adaptation of a commercial,
still, we can see Irving’s heart expressed through the constant witticism and near-perfect
character of Uncle Drew. It is shown that Kyrie really wants to inspire the youth and even the
elders, that the joy found in playing basketball is ageless.
