In the Elizabethan Era (1558–1603), marriage played a much different role in society when

compared to the present, although there are exceptions to this list. This was observed, like that of
trade in a business. Parents would negotiate terms for the marriage of their children with no regard for
the personal feelings of the children. These practices would vary among the different combinations of
wealth classes scene in theses times. Arranged marriages were looked at to be sensible and socially
accepted while on the other hand, romantic love was scene to be foolish. These arranged marriages
helped the rich control the distribution of money throughout society, thus ensuring that the wealthy
sustain and grow their affluence, whereas the poor will continue to face the ever growing threats of
poverty. Women when compared with men, had no power to whom they might marry, this lead to
some of these marriages being dysfunctional. This lead to women being brutalized by their husbands.
