Topic: Agri-tech & Food Technology, A study on awareness about


Food waste disposal in Chennai city

Objectives:
1. To study the causes for major food wastage in public opinion
2. To study the prevention strategies used to prevent food wastage
3. To study the various traditional techniques used to dispose waste by the
general public
4. To study the various products manufactured from food waste and their
contribution to the environment.

Statement of problem:

 At the farm level: Crops may be left unharvested due to cosmetic imperfections or
lack of market demand, leading to food waste and economic losses for farmers.
 During storage and transportation: Inadequate storage facilities and improper
handling can lead to spoilage and spoilage of food during transportation, resulting
in financial losses and food shortages.
 In supermarkets and restaurants: Overstocking, confusing expiration date
labels, and large portion sizes can all contribute to food waste in supermarkets and
restaurants.
 At the consumer level: Consumers often buy more food than they can eat, leading
to food spoilage in their homes.

Scope:
Thus the study aims at Improving food supply chain management to reduce
inefficiencies and losses, educating consumers about food storage, meal planning, and
portion control, implementing policies and regulations that incentivize food waste
reduction and promote sustainable practices and Supporting initiatives that redistribute
surplus food to those in need.

Method of study:
The study is carried over by collecting sample data through survey method and
waste audit. Moreover, a pilot study was undertaken to understand the various
aspects and scope of the study. To study the relationship between various factors
and other forces that influence the food waste disposal mechanism chain,
Regression and Correlation method of study is adapted.
