Energy Flow in Ecosystems

Energy flow is the movement of energy through an

ecosystem, from the sun to producers, then to
consumers, and finally to decomposers. This flow of
energy is essential for the survival of all organisms in
an ecosystem.

Producers
Producers, such as plants and algae, use energy from
the sun to create their own food through
photosynthesis. This energy is stored in the form of
glucose and other organic compounds.

Consumers
Consumers are organisms that obtain energy by
consuming other organisms. There are three types of
consumers: herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores.
Herbivores eat only plants, while carnivores eat only
other animals. Omnivores eat both plants and animals.

Decomposers
Decomposers, such as bacteria and fungi, break down
dead organic matter and recycle nutrients back into
the ecosystem. This process releases energy that can
be used by other organisms.
