Data Provided: None DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AND STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING Spring Semester 2006-2007 Engineering Geology Time allowed 2 Hours 30 Minutes There are THREE QUESTIONS. Attempt all THREE questions. civ352 TURN OVER civ352 4. Answer all four sections: (a) What are the three main methods of drilling boreholes for site investigation purposes? Outline the particular capabilities of each method. 9 marks (b) For two of these methods give details of the equipment and procedures used for drilling, indicating the ground conditions for which they would be most appropriate, 40 marks (c) Describe the techniques used for obtaining disturbed and undisturbed samples of soils or rocks for both of the drilling methods in Section (b). 6 marks (d) Discuss the most appropriate method(s) of drilling for the investigation of the site of a multi-storey building in an area in which the desk study suggests that the following ground conditions are present: Thickness Material Up to 4m Sandy til 6 or 7m Stiff boulder clay Notknown _|__ Beds of sandstone and limestone __} | ‘The water table is expected to lie within the superficial deposits. Undisturbed samples of the soils are required and it is necessary to determine the depth of rockhead. 9 marks 2. Answer all three sections. (a) Define the term discontinuity in rock mechanics and describe the formation processes of different types of discontinuities. 8 marks (b) Explain why discontinuities are important in terms of behaviour at the scales of laboratory test samples and large-scale engineering construction. 416 marks (©) Discuss ways in which the properties of discontinuities in rock masses may be assessed by carrying out appropriate field-based measurements and laboratory tests, 9 marks 3. Answer all three sections: (a) Describe the methods of excavation of tunnels. What are the main factors affecting the choice of method? 416 marks (b) What are the main methods of supporting the ground during tunnel construction? Outline the geological factors affecting the applicability of the various methods and explain how the stand-up time for an excavation can be predicted. 40 marks (©) Discuss the ground support problems liable to occur during the construction of a 3m diameter tunnel at a minimum depth of 15m in ground consisting of granite in some places and folded schist and slate in others, overlain by up to 12m of alluvial flood plain deposits. 7 marks END OF QUESTION PAPER clv3s2 2
