Holloway House, The Market Place Warwick, England CV34 4SJ Mark Nightingale 20 Jazz Etudes for tenor trombone This book sets out to fill a gap in tenor trombone literature, namely, studies written in a jazz idiom for players of an intermediate to advanced level. T hope they prove to be an enjoyable alternative to the more conventional studies as well as giving an insight into the construction of a jazz solo The book is written in three sections; A,B and C. Section A - Preface Exercises 1-12 ( in each major key ) are bebop lines superimposed over a well known standard chord sequence or 12 bar blues. They should be played at a comfortable volume, with slight peaks and troughs as the phrases naturally dictate. The range is up to D above high Bb and use is made of both bass and tenor clefs. All quavers should be played with a soft ‘du’ tongue and swung ie. W= | ¢ Tryto inject a feeling of life at all times and never let the tempo Waiver. N.B.Inthe rhythm JG J the first of the two semiquavers should be played at the moment you would have played the swing quaver they replaceie. JJ) < j j Treat the phrase {17] in the same manner. a a oh ; Don’t use any tongue except on the first note of the turn without forgetting to correctly place the quaver. Optimum metronome marks are given. If you have any difficulties always slow the passage down to a manageable speed and then gradually work back to tempo by moving 1 or 2 notches on the metronome at a time. Don’t panic when you see the complex-looking 12/8 exercises! The semiquavers are swung and should be played in a relaxed manner. Analysis of the lines and comparison to the basic chord sequence might appear to reveal a disparency at first glance. Further study should bear in mind the outer chordal extensions ( flattened or sharpened 9ths, 13ths etc. ), accented or unaccented passing notes, or the implication of substitute chords. ( Chords which may replace the original without changing the harmonic sense of direction of the sequence - chromatic chordal movement for example ). 7 ! 1. The pioneer of bebop on the trombone , he has influenced in one way or another the style of nearly every player today. This etude is based on the chord sequence of “Yesterdays” by Jerome Kern; a frequent solo vehicle for J.J. Notes on interpretation 1 Use a clean even articulation on all notes. 2 All falls are quick and do not drop beyond their original harmonic series.( i.e. they go down the slide) 3 Try to switch with ease into and out of the double-tempo feel sections. 19. You can hear the sheer fun in his solos, along with some very rhythmic and melodic lines that made him Britain’s top jazz trombonist for many years. Duke Ellingtons’ “In a Mellowtone” was an obvious choice for the chord sequence on which to base this final etude. Notes on interpretation 1 Play at a good strong dynamic. 2 The falls that come at the end of phrases should be “kissed off” in an exaggerated way. 3 Use a firm triplet feel to all quavers, with quite a hard attack. 4 Have fun! 20.
