DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS
YEAR/SEM:II/III MAX MARKS:50
PART-A(Answer all the Questions) (5x3=15)
1.What is a Fillet Wleded Joint?
2.Describe the Design Procedure of Sleeve and Cotter Joint?
3. Describe the Design Procedure of Knuckle Joint?
4.What is a Coupling?Give its Applications.
5.What is the Material used for Flange Coupling Parts?
PART-B(Answer all the Questions) (35)
1.Calculate the Leg(Size) of the Weld for the Welding Joint Shown in Fig. The Static tensile
Load acting on the Plates is 100KN.Assume the Permissible Shear Stress and Tensile Stress of
the Weld as 70 N/mm2.(7)

2.Design a Knuckle Joint to transmit a Load of 60KN .Take Allowable Stresses as 60Mpa in
Tension,75Mpa in Compression and 40Mpa in Shear.(14)
3.Design a Protective type of CI Flange Coupling for a Steel Shaft transmitting 15KW at
200Rpm and having an Allowable Shear Stress of 40N/mm2.The Working Stress in the Bolts
Should not Exceed 30N/mm2. Assume that the Same Material is used for Shaft and Key and that
the Crushing Stress is Twice the Value of its Shear Stress. The Maximum Torque is 25% greater
than the full load Torque. The Shear Stress for CI is 15N/mm2.(14)
