4. PROCESS ENGINEER
Your main duties will be to:-

- Exposure of interacting with licensors/vendors to resolve process problems and

maintain contacts with local and international organization for problems encountered
is preferred.
- Experience in Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) and Site Acceptance Test (SAT)
support and development of Operated Training Simulative(OTS).
- Should be able to cater to the process engineering demand from various customer
departments including verification of Project documents before handing over of plant
to operating departments.
- Should be able to Propose improvements and enhancements in the existing facilities.
- be able to extend full technical support and training for young Process Engineers
recruited to the organization.
- Should have prior experience in safety reviews such as (PHA-HAZOP) study and
development /review of Standard operating procedures (SOP).

Some of these responsibilites included:

1- Processing and studying Requests for Modifications (RFMs) submitted by the

Operations/production team: this was the biggest bulk of my tasks, and RFMs never stop
even if its a mature field (oil/water flows and compositions change with time and so does the
process operating way). Whether it was a small RFM like adding a valve somewhere for
better operations or a big RFM like changing the whole operating procedure of a plant, they
all passed by Process to study if the request is feasible and to simulate it using a simulation
software before giving an initial approval. After our initial approval, management has to
agree to the cost of modification proposed by the construction dept who has to deal with the
contractor, then we proceed with doing the detailed study with the proposed P&IDs. The
detailed study can take a few hours to a few weeks depending on how big the job and if its a
new thing for us to do in the field. If it was routine like adding a new well we just drilled to
the production network, its pretty quick (mostly bcz the feasibility study was done pre
drilling, and wellpads are similar to each other). If its a modification within a plant, then the
study needs to have the input of the instrumentation engineer and electrical engineer besides
the process. A procelss engineer main scope in the study is the flow and its thermodynamics
and the safety measures that need to be implemented process wise (e.g. shutdown valve,
pressure relief etc...). During the study, a HAZOP study is done too (normally led by the
process engineer). The P&IDs then go for detailed isometric drawing by the draftman before
handing it to the construction contractor.

(Note: most of the times, if the modification is very big and exceeds a certain budget (like
adding a completely new separator to the plant), it becomes a project which is then handled
by the projects department who outsource the study to an external engineering company).
2- making sure current operating parameters (such as setpoints of the safety instruments) are
within the company's technical standards and specifications (a lot of reading to do)

3- Running simulations on a regular basis using Hysys or PRO2 and other simulation
softwares.

4- Leading small process studies to discover efficiency and optimisation opportunities to

propose them to Operations and Management (basically its like us submitting an RFM to
ourselves).

5- And by far this is the most important responsibility, Safety. This is the biggest
responsibility a process engineer would ever have. As a process engineer, you are the ones
approving the design of an RFM, and your biggest obstacle can be a mangement that is cost-
cutting or an operation department that is looking for a shortcut. You need to advocate fiercly
for a design that is inherntly safe and that has additional layers of protection. Your strong
principles in implementing saftey will be your ally. Your next ally are your company
technical standards (thats why you have to read a lot, however, this doesnt mean they are fool
proof, those too are normally challenged). Don't overdo it though like putting too much of
safety instruments in every pipe corner. You will learn with experience.
