Passive voice

We use a passive verb when whe don’t know who did something or the action is more important
than who does it.
We form the passive with the correct form of the verb BE and the 3rd form of a verb.

Ex 1.: Somebody built this house in 1935. Active


This house was built in 1935. Passive

Who built this house? – It doesn’t really matter.


 No subject
 the verb changes: built-was built

Ex 2.: Rita writes a letter. Active


A letter is written. (by Rita) Passive

Present Simple I make a cake. A cake is made.
Present Continuous I am making a cake. A cake is being made.
Past Simple I made a cake A cake was made.
Past Continous I was making a cake. A cake was being made.
Present Perfect I have made a cake. A cake has been made.
Past Perfect I had made a cake. A cake had been made.
Future Simple (will) I will make a cake. A cake will be made.
Future (to be going to) I am going to make a cake. A cake is going to be made.
