Too much stuff?

Eighteen months ago, my morning routine could be described as ‘one mad

panic’. My wife Carina and I were always awake and up on time, but

somehow the pre-school rush regularly ended in a frenzy to get our children

Camille, aged eight, Ethan, seven, and Stephanie, three, dressed, fed,

hair-brushed and out the door. 0 ___ Every morning would end in tears as

we rushed around trying to leave the house – one of us would get

stressed and often there were raised voices. Every day we vowed, ‘We

should be more organised.’

Today, things couldn’t be more different. Our morning routine runs pretty

much like clockwork. My alarm is set for 7.30 a.m. Carina gets up much

earlier to feed the dogs, and to enjoy her coffee in peace before the children

descend. Uniforms are ready to be stepped into, lunch boxes are

packed, hair is brushed, and the school bags are waiting by the door. 1 ___

Everyone is out by 8.30 a.m. and deposited at nursery and school.

Our lives transformed for the better in 2020, when I had a ‘light-bulb

moment’ that changed everything. 2 ___ It was about minimalism and

learning to live clutter free, made by friends Fields Millburn and Nicodemus.

C1–C2
END OF COURSE TEST | Version C

They’d both been earning six-figure salaries when they started

questioning how their lives might be better with less, and began slowly

developing their philosophy.

After the first five minutes of watching the documentary, I was sold. I had

finally found my tribe. It struck me that most TV shows, online media,

advertising campaigns and social media influencers are selling you an idea

of how your life should be. They show you the car that gives you that

freedom to explore and ‘just drive’, the clothes and make-up that make you

more attractive. 3 ___

Fields Millburn and Nicodemus advocate a life where you stop searching for

that perfect (perceived) existence and stop trying to buy happiness.

They’re not alone in this message – there’s another TV show about moving

to small houses to be mortgage- and clutter-free.

According to the pair, true minimalism is not just about making physical

changes and throwing stuff out, it’s about a change of mind set. 4 ___

So I took the plunge and started to get rid of everything I didn’t need, use or

like and it worked. Seeing my enthusiasm and how good it made me

feel, the family followed suit. We all found it so much easier than we’d

imagined and it has truly transformed our lives.

0 _C_ A Breakfast is a nice time for us all to sit down and chat about
our plans for the day.

1 ___ B I’d watched a programme that completely changed my

mindset, and ultimately, my way of life.

2 ___ C Much as we tried to stay organised, something would just not

want to be found: a hairbrush, a water bottle, a school shoe.
3 ___ D Maybe it’s because I’m a psychologist, but it struck me that
this is not how most lives really are.
4 ___
E Living with less means only keeping things that you get
enjoyment or value from, but is also about only buying what
you need.
