1.1 Product Introduction
Thank you for pur cha sin g and usin g ou r print ser ver.
Th is pr int serve r allows your printer to becom e a sha red
de vice on the netwo rk. It o ffe rs pr int ing flexib ility and
mana geabil it y on you r Local Are a Networ k at an e xtremel y
low cost and w ith an ab solute minimum setup and
ma inten ance requir ed.
This print ser ve r pro vides IEEE 802.11g/b wireless

LA N (up to 54M bp s dat a tran sfer rate ), an Eth ernet networ k
port (10/100Mbps Ethernet), two USB 2.0 ports and one
Par allel port for print er s.
This print ser ver support s IPX/SPX, N etBEUI, TCP/IP

and Apple Talk protocol s. It is the be st network print ing
solution s for various com mon netwo rk oper ating syste ms
such as Window s 95/98SE/Me/N T/2000/XP/2003, N etWa re,
Unix/ Linu x and MAC OS, etc.
With the h elp o f Inst allation Wiza rd, you can easil y
and in stantl y co mplete the settin gs fo r the print ing
en vironment, and start enjoying the fant a stic fe ature s
provided b y the pr int ser ve r.
In the following ch apter s, we will introduce in detail

the printin g fe ature s, in stallation methods, and system
configurat ion for d ifferent netwo rk en viron ment s.

Chapter 9 introdu ce s the co mmands that c an be u sed in

Chapter 10 introduce s Pr int Ser ver ’ s IPP Print ing

fun ction and setup procedu re. The IP P Pr inting provide s a
convenient way to pr int docu ment s a cross the Int ernet by
the IP P protocol.

1.6 Firmw are & Printing Function
The pr int server provide s a complete network print ing
solution. The feature set is listed below:

1. Unpac k the pr int server pac ka ge and ve rify that all

the item s list ed in the sect ion 1.2 a re pro vid ed.
2. Connect the print ser ver to the printer you want to

sha re on the n etwor k.
3. C onnect the pr int serve r to your n etwor k by attached

the networ k c able to the UTP port o f the pr int ser ve r.
4. Connect the power ad apter to the print ser ve r. The

print se rver will p er form th e Power -On-Sel f-Test ( POS T)
after it is powe red on. Dur in g the POS T, the th ree P rinter
Port LEDs w ill be on. Wh en the LEDs a re unl ighted, the
print se r ver is r ead y.
NOTE1: MUST use the power adapter shipped with the print
server, do NOT use any other power adapter from any
sources.
NOTE2: To prevent the compatibility problem between print

server and a few printer, it is recommended that you
power on the print server before the printer.

3.1 System Arc hitecture
Print ser ve r supports Window s Pe er-to- Pe er networ k
print ing mode, which is su itable for most med ium and small
network en viron ments. Th rough quic k and simple
in stallation pro cedure, user s c an immed iat ely en jo y the
convenienc e o f n etwork pr int ing.
Installat ion procedu re is separ ated into follow in g two

parts:
1. Adm in istrator In stallation and Setup ( refer to

se ction 2 for more detailed in formation).
S ystem admin istr ators mu st :
In stall ad ministr ator’s util itie s into h is/her

computer.
Configure print se r ver fro m administr ator’ s

configurat ion util it y.

Client u ser s must install Window s PTPP drive r (Peer-

to-Pe er Pr inting) for netwo rk pr inting.
In add ition, a fte r P TPP is in stalled, the syst em will

automat ically search for all pr int se r vers on the network,
and add the pr int in g port o f the print ser ve r s into W indows’
print ing port ( refer to Networ k Pr inting Arch ite cture in
se ction 1.4 for more d eta iled information ).

3.2 Administrator Insta llation and Setup
The Admin istrator In stallation can b e per for med on
Window s 95/98SE/M e/NT/2000/X P/2003 with the sa me
use r inter face. Be for e the in stallation, plea se ver ify that
your netwo rk proto col is in stalled on your PC (TC P/IP, IPX
and/or NetBEUI). It w ill be h elp ful in your installat ion
proce ss.
1. Insert the CD shipped alon g with the p rint ser ve r

into you r CD-ROM drive. The Autorun. e xe progra m should
be e xe cuted autom atically. If not, run Autorun. e xe
manu ally from C D-ROM dr ive’s root director y.
2. The In stallation will be displa yed on th e screen a s

followin g. Click “Ad min Utility” th en “English Ver sion”.

3. The “Utilitie s Setup” w indow will be displ ayed.
Click “Ne xt”.
4. Clic k “Next ” to in stall the utilitie s in the default

folder or clic k “B rowse” to spe cify the destination folder
where you would like to in stall the utilities.

5. Select the component s you want to inst all. It is
highl y recom mend ed to install all pro vided components.
Click “Ne xt” to cont inue.
6. Specify the program folder where the pro gr a m icons

will be add ed to, cl ic k “ Ne xt”.

prepa re to configu re the Print Ser ve r. The “Choose Pr int
Ser ve r” will list all Pr int Ser ver s with in the networ k. Select
the Print Ser ve r you would l ike to con figu re and cl ick
“Next”.
NOTE 1: If this is the first time you configure the Print Server,
the “Print Server Name” is the last 6-digit of MAC ID
with prefix “PS”. Please check the MAC ID on the
print server.
NOTE 2: The list can only display the devices from the same
manufacturer.

and clic k “Ne xt”.
10. Specify the IP Addr ess for the Pr int S er ve r

manu ally or click “N ext” to keep de fault IP Add ress, i.e.
192.168.2.2.

11. The configuration sum mary is displayed in the
window. Now, you ha ve completed th e “ Pr int Se r ver S etup”.
Click “Fin ish ” and your system will add network po rt of the
Pr int Se rve r to you r PC automat ically.

totally completed. Click “F inish ”.

Configure the print se rver (including the pr int

se r ver n ame and networ k p rotocol)
Add the networ k po rt of the p rint ser ve r to the

administrator ’ s PC .
If you want to print from this administr ator’ s PC to the

print serve r, all you ne ed to do is to pe r form W indows’
stand ard “ Add Pr inte r” procedu re (pl ea se re fer to Sect ion
3.6).

3.3 Administrator Utilities
After Ad ministr ator Inst allation is complet ed, there
will be fou r util itie s in p rint ser ver’ s Pro gr am folder.
Networ k Port s Quic k Setup – Add the networ k

ports of pr int ser ve rs within the network to your PC .
Pr int S er ver Con figurat ion – Allow s you to

configure the p rint ser ve r’s IP Address, networ k
protocols and other adva nc ed functions. Ple ase
re fer to Chapter 7 fo r the detail in struction of the
configurat ion.
Remote Port s – Add th e netwo rk port o f remote

printe r ser ver to your PC .
Unin stall – Assistant for re moving all installed

administrator so ftwar e.

3.4 Clie nt Insta llation and Setup
The C lient In stallation c an be performed on Windows
95/98SE/M e/NT/2000/XP/2003 with the sa me user interfa ce.
Befo re the in stallation pro cedure, please con fir m that your
PC has connected to the networ k and in stalled at lea st one
network protocol.
1. Insert the CD shipped alon g with the p rint ser ve r

into you r CD-ROM drive. The Autorun. e xe progra m should
be e xe cuted autom atically. If not, run Autorun. e xe
manu ally from C D-ROM dr ive’s root director y.
2. The "Installat ion Man a ger" will be displa yed on the

sc reen as follows. Clic k “C lient Utility” then “Engl ish
Version”.

Click “Ne xt”.
4. Clic k “Next ” to in stall the utilitie s in the default

folder or clic k “B rowse” to spe cify the destination folder
where you would like to in stall the utilities.

7. Now, the installation procedure is co mpleted, you
are re ad y to set up the cl ient’s computer. All netwo rk port s
of the P rint S er ve r s detect ed on the network will be added
to your PC automaticall y, clic k “Continue”.
8. The Client Installat ion procedur e is co mpleted.

Click “Fin ish ”.

Add all the print server’ s netwo rk ports o f the

network to the cl ient’ s PC.

3.5 Clie nt Utilities
After Client Installation is completed, the re w ill be

The Uninstall Netwo rk Driver w ill assist you in

re mo vin g all in stalled client so ftware. The other two tools
are d escribed as follows.

simpl e method to add or re move pr int ser ver’ s printer port
from th e cl ient’ s co mputer.

Durin g the cl ient’s in stallat ion pro cedur e, the system
will automat ically sear ch for all pr int se rve rs on the
network, and add the m into the print er port s of the cl ient’ s
compute r ( se e below).
If you h ave ju st in stalled another n ew p rint ser ver in

the networ k, you must run this pro gr a m first. Th is pro gram
will search for new print ser ver s and allow you to add the
new networ k pr inter port into client’s computer
conveniently. Perfor m the standard Add Pr inter procedu re,
then you c an print directly to the p rinter th rough the newl y
in stalled pr int server.

network, it cannot search and configu re pr int ser ve rs on
other subnet s across networ k se gm ent s. You must use
Remote Port s Utilit y descr ibed in the ne xt sect ion to

Unix LPD ( Line Pr inter D ae mon) protocol. The LPD
protocol originated w ith Unix r elease is ba sed on the B SD
ve r sion of Un ix and supported under mo st versions of Unix.
This chapter e xplains ho w to con figur e the print ser ve r

fo r TCP/IP operation, and how to modify configurat ion
files on your Unix system to allow print ing to the print
se r ver. The con figuration example s in this manual follow
the syntax for B SD based Un ix systems. Pl ea se r efer to the
related system docum entat ion for the cor rect syntax o f your
syste ms.
To con figure the pr int ser ve r for LPD printin g, pe rform

the procedure s below:

print ser ver to enable TC P/ IP support using the
configurat ion progr am.

6.3 Setup Print Server’s IP Address
The pr int serve r mu st have a unique IP addre ss in order
to be recognized b y the network.
You can set up the IP addre ss on the va rious Unix

syste ms using an y one o f the follow in g m ethods:
1. DHCP (Dynamic Host Configu rat ion P rotocol)
2. BOOTP (B ootst rap Protocol)
The print ser ve r w ill u se the l ast thre e methods to

obtain its IP addr ess autom atically if it s IP addr e ss is
configured as Auto (0.0.0.0).
6 .3 .1 DHCP
There ar e many Unix syste ms that support DHCP

protocol, and the procedur es to configu re the DHC P ser ve r
database are different. This manual doe s not d escrib e the
DHC P ser ve r con figuration on the Unix system s. It is
highl y recom mend ed that the DHC P serve r should be
located on the sa me networ k a s the pr int ser ve r.
6 .3 .2 BOOTP
If you have the BOOTP daemon, bootpd, running on

your UNIX system that is ac ce ssible b y the pr int ser ver,
you can use the BOOTP protocol to set up the IP address o f
the print ser ve r. We re commend that the B OOTP ser ve r
should b e loc ated on the same subn et as the p rint ser ver. If
you u se Networ k In fo rmat ion Ser vice s (NIS ) in your system,
you ma y n eed to rebuild th e NIS map with the BOO TP

9.4 Modify Setting Values – “set” Command
“set” comm and is u sed to mod ify the sett in g valu es o f
this print se rver. The format o f “set” co mmand is a s

Then the value will be written into the system

configurat ion. For exampl e, if you want to set IP address o f
the print ser ver to 192.168.2.2, type “ set ip 192.168.2.2”
command and the IP o f the print ser ve r will be changed.

10.1 Introd uction
IPP ( Int ernet Pr int in g P rotocol) Printin g pro vide s a
convenient way of re mote pr int ing service by TCP/IP. The
print serve r can suppo rt IP P pr inting b y de fault. It is
needless to do any sett ing. An y PC that can support IPP
print ing, for exa mple W indows 2000/XP, can d irectl y u se s
the print ser ver by IP. By using the IP P printin g, you can
sha re the pr inter to all the PC’s that can acce ss the print
se r ver b y IP. You can even share your print er to Internet
use rs.

10.2 System Setup
1 0.2.1 Print Server Side
It is n eedle ss to do any sett ing on the print ser ve r side.

Make su re the print ser ve r has corr ect IP settings. If you
want to share the printer s to Int ernet users, you ha ve to set
a real IP to the print server. You al so ha ve to make sure
that any gatewa y; router or fir ewall doe s not block IPP
protocol if you have the se gatew ay de vic es installed in your
network.

standard port nu mber. Port N am e is the port
nam e of print ser ve r that your p rint er is
connected to. The default port n ame is “lpt1”.

http://192.168.3.66:631/lpt1. A fter enterin g the

is not in the l ist, cl ick “Have D isk… ” to inst all

the “Available Port s” in “Netwo rk Po rts Quick S etup”,
please follow the step s b elow.
