Edgar Allan Poe

He was born in Boston, United States, 1809 and he died in Baltimore, id, 1849.
American poet, narrator and critic, the bets storytellers of all times. Poe argued that
the highest literary expression is poetry, around this time (1832) he entered the
southern Baltimore messenger newspaper as an editor in which various stories
and poems of his appeared, and which under his direction would become the most
important newspaper in the south of the country. Their parents were: Elizabeth
Arnold Poe and David Poe. Something very curious was that his parents died when
he was two years old, was raised by John Allan a businessman even though
neverwanted to legalize adoption. Poe´s relationships whit his adoptive father was
traumatic.

Background

He was married with Virginia Eliza Clemm, she and Poe were cousins, they got
married when she was 13 and he was 27 at the boarding house where Virginia, her
mother and Poe were living in Richmond. While it was not particularly unusual for
first cousins to marry at that time, Virginia was a bit on the young side. Virginia
Eliza Clemm was born in 1822 in Baltimore, Maryland. Her father William Clemm,
Jr., a hardware merchant, had married her mother Maria Poe after the death of his
first wife, Clemm had five children from his previous marriage and went on to have
three more with Maria. Virginia was writer… unfortunately, she fell ill with
tuberculosis and suffered for the last five years of her life, until her death at age 24.

In some Country, a sickness known as the Red Death ravages the populace.
The malady kills its victims in half an hour and is named so due to its terrible
symptoms: dizziness, sharp pain, bleeding, and red spots. The victims are
rejected and left without aid.

Prince Prospero gathers his courtly friends and isolates himself from the
sickness in a walled abbey filled with luxuries. He locks the doors to prevent the
spread of the plague among his group. After 6 months of seclusion, Prospero
holds a masquerade ball in an imperial suite with seven rooms connected by a
passage. Each room has stained glass windows of different colors, and in the
seventh, the décor is entirely black with scarlet windows. The ebony clock in the
room chimes every hour with a disturbing sound; the party is sumptuous and
extravagant. At midnight, a masked figure arrives among the guests dressed in
a funeral attire and a realistic blood-filled mask. The presence causes fear, and
Prospero, annoyed, demands he be hanged. Far from being intimidated, the
masked figure approaches Prospero uninterested due to the terror his
appearance elicits. Enraged, the prince goes room to room in search of the
intruder as he unsheathes his dagger to execute him. But his rage is not
enough, as when the two confront each other in the seventh room, something
horrifying occurs: just as Prospero is about to attack the intruder, instead he lets
out a scream and collapses dead alongside his dagger. Finally, the crowd
musters the courage and bursts into the room to aid Prospero and capture the
masked figure. However, as they attempt to rip off the intruder’s mask and
shroud, the revelers are struck silent in horror: there is nothing underneath the
disguise. This is how all present recognize the presence of the s about the
masque of the red dead. It is a great story that captivates thanks to its
successful setting and its narrativeRed Death. One by one, they fall and die in

despair and agony. As the last of the guests fades away, the ebony clock stops
working and “Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion
over all.”

Opinions

 “The Masque of the Red Death” by Edgar Allan Poe is a masterpiece of


the horror genre. The story is full of mystery and suspense, and the
detailed description of the masquerade creates an oppressive and
unsettling atmosphere that captures the reader. Moreover, the final
revelation of the true meaning of the mask is surprising and impactful,
making the story even more memorable.
 Although “The Masque of the Red Death” is a classic example of the
horror genre, some may find it somewhat outdated and predictable
compared to contemporary horror. Additionally, the plot unfolds quite
slowly, which may cause some readers to become bored before
reaching the most interesting part of the story.
 Which despite being a somewhat old work is very easy to read today;
highly recommended. A very unique details is that no one is save.
