Measurement of leaf areas

Introduction
A simple, effective and enjoyable way to measure
the area of irregular shapes, such as leaves,by
tracing out the shape on a graph paper.
Tools
Pen/Pencil
Parts
Graph sheet *4, Leaf *4(Different Plants)
Precautions
Wash hands after handling leaves as it might
contain dust.
 Select a leaf with almost round and smooth margin.
 Lay the leaf on the graph sheet.
 Traces its outline using Pen/Pencil.
 No need to trace the area of stem(petiole).
 Step 2-Marking the squares
 Use two different conditions colors to mark full
squares and partial ones.
 Use Pen/Pencil and number the full squares inside
the leaf trace.
 Use an alternative color to number the partial
squares inside the leaf trace.
 Multiply the number of full squares by 1 cm2 and
partial squares by 0.5 cm2 and add them together.
 Repeat the above steps for any number of leaves.
 Multiplying partial squares by 0.5 cm2 is not
accurate.But,since the errors average out,good
estimate of the leafs area is obtained.
 Step 4- Surface area of different
type of leaves
 Similarly, calculate the surface area of at least
three different types leaves by repeating the
step 1 to step 3
Troubleshooting

 Not able to get precise count-Do not miscount

full and partial squares.
 Traces has not come out well-Do not move leaf
while tracing.
 Error margin-Approximate the partial squares
as half.
