Goals & Vision

Currently Intact has outlined its goals for the next 10 years in its strategic Roadmap. It has 2 main goals:
to achieve a 10% NOIPS (Net operating income per share) and to achieve a 500bps annual return on
equity.

It has focused on 5 key (business) strategies to achieve this goal:

- Expanding its leadership position in Canada

- Strengthen its leading position in the UK & Ireland
- Build a Specialty Lines Leader
- Invest in our people

Design and structure

Intact Insurance is a corporation with 4 main business lines; its P&C insurance in Canada, its Global
Specialty Line, and its UK insurance line. Intact uses a divisional structure and has a CEO for the company
of as a whole and 3 CEOs who each head each of its 3 divisions. In addition, the company has 11 other
members of its executive team. The company is governed by a board of directors that comprises of 13
members.

Functions and processes

As an insurance company, its key revenue generating function is underwriting. In order to do this in a
profitable manner it has a number of other “core” functions to support its underwriting. Key among
them is its claims management/ customer service and actuarial / risk management functions.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Currently Intact’s strengths are that it has a strong balance sheet and disciplined risk management
practices. Because of this it still remains profitable despite recent negative environmental conditions
such as increased inflation and increased natural disasters. Its finances have also been bolstered by the
M&A that it has recently done in Canada, the US and the UK. Intact is also well positioned to continue its
current consolidation efforts and to increase its market share in North America’s growing insurance
industry. (Intact Financial Corporation, 2023a), (Intact Financial Corporation, 2022)

One of the company’s weaknesses is that it is strongly concentrated in the Canadian Market. Though it’s
acquisition of RSA in the UK as alleviated some of this concern the company is still venerable to Canada’s
economic condition. “As a result, Intact’s financial results are subject to general regulatory, legal,
economic, demographic, competitive and other conditions in Canada”. A recent example of this is the
increase of interest rates and natural disasters that have happened in Canada recently, which made
Intact miss its Q2-2023 financial target.

Job Analysis
Determining the job duties/tasks/responsibilities of this position was done mainly through the use of
existing documentation due to lack of access to HR mangers. (Catano et al., 2019) As a starting reference
point, the NOC description, Career Handbook and Job Bank Manuals for human resource managers on
the Government of Canada website were used. This provided a good starting point as it listed the
activities that HR Managers broadly carry out across all industries as researched by the government.
Next, the existing job descriptions for Managerial roles at Intact were reviewed. While only one job
description was specifically for the role of HR manager, the job descriptions of three other managerial
roles within the company were revied and cross referenced with each other. Points that overlapped/were
similar with each other were included. More specific attention was paid to the job description that was
specifically for the HR Manager role. Additionally, HR Manager job descriptions from posting in similar
industries (e.g. insurance, finance, banking) were looked at.

Lastly based on the organizational analysis consideration was made for tasks duties that may be
required when mergers and acquisitions take place. Intact has been active and intentional in their
acquisitions of brokerages in Canada and internationally. Having an HR manager with knowledge and/or
experience in M&A would be a strong asset. Along with that, a manager that has experience/ knowledge
of regional mobility practices would be an asset. In order to determine the duties/tasks/responsibilities
related to this posting for managerial positions in HR relation to regional mobility and M&A were
reviewed.

Further to the method above, the analysis was view by employee that has experience as both a recruiter
and HR generalist (current) at Intact Insurance. Though not a manager, the were able to verify and add
to some of the duties competencies that their manager exhibits and that HR looks for in the managers
they hire for other departments.
