What’s In

The word “interpersonal” was first used in 1835, coining two words together;
“inter” + “personal”. Inter comes from the word “interact” meaning to participate
or having an activity with someone or other people thus if there is an interaction
between two or more people, good relationships are being created. When we say
personal, we refer to a particular or a peculiar person. Hence, interpersonal means
the building of relationship between two or more people.

Interpersonal Communication – it is a way by which the thoughts, feelings,

meanings and ideas are exchanged in a face- to- face settings between two people
or more. It can be performed through an interview, a dialog/discussion or a
conversation.

Having a good interpersonal communication responds to the feelings of other people

and expresses respect. Positive results of different opinions are considered. It is
important to a healthy relationship; it strengthens the bond. If people do not
communicate with each other effectively, problems are bound to come.

What I Can Do
Task: Interpersonal Communication at Work
Here is a transcript of a conversation which you can access online thru this link:
https://youtu.be/YY2yjEEoB3U . A transcription of the video is placed below.

Moderator: So, you know we’re talking about discussion, and the topic is: Is it better
to study online or in a regular classroom? Okay, who wants to go first?
Adam: Okay, so I’ll start and I think that it’s actually very good to study online because
it’s very convenient; because you can study whenever you want and at your own pace.
Alex: Okay, that’s true, but if you’re going to study online……
Ronnie: Sorry but……
Alex: Please let me finish. Let me finish…..As I was saying, that’s true, but if you’re
studying online you do need to motivate yourself, so I think it’s better to be in a
classroom where you have other students and a teacher who can motivate you.
Ronnie: That’s true, but some people can’t afford to go to a classroom and don’t have
enough money or resources to actually go to a big school. So, studying online, you can
actually do it for free.
James: Well, I would like to add. May I say something? Ronnie: Sure. James: Soft
skills. That’s not usually talked about in schools, but when we talk about “soft skills”
it’s actually interaction, utilizing your English when you’re with other people…..
Adam: You make a very good point but I would also like to add something having
classmates takes you away from your focus…….
Ronnie: Yeah, but sometimes the resources that you get in the classroom are boring and
online you can just look up…..
Alex: Okay, don’t get me wrong. I mean there are good resources in the internet. But I
think if you go to school, if you are in the classroom, you’re with a teacher who is
trained, is a professional, who can give you the resources you need to improve your
English.
Ronnie: Well, it’s a good thing you said about professional teachers. We all have
professional teachers ready to teach you. So in conclusion, in a nutshell, can we just,
kind of sum up and say that studying online or in a classroom will help everyone?
Adam/Alex/James: Sure. I think so…I can agree with that.

your answer in one or 2 sentences.
