John Winston Lennon was born in Liverpool in 1940. When he was two years old,
his father left the family, and then when John was four, his mother also left, so he
went to live with his aunt, Mimi Smith. He had his first band when sixteen and, in
1957, Paul McCartney joined him. George Harrison, Paul’s friend, then became the
lead guitarist. The last member of the group (after Pete Best, the first drummer, left)
was Ringo Starr. The name of the band was the Beatles.
In 1960 they spent four months in Hamburg, Germany, where they played music for
eight hours every night, and that was the beginning of Beatlemania. They came back
to England and, in 1962, John married Cynthia Powell. Together they had a baby
son, Julian.
The Beatles recorded a lot of albums but they played their last official concert at the
end of 1966. John met Yoko Ono, his second wife, in November of that year. After
the band broke up in 1970, all the band members made solo albums. John wrote
‘Imagine” in 1971, a song that everyone knows today.
John went to live in America in the 1970s and he had a second son, Sean, in 1975.
But his life ended on 8 December 1980 when Mark Chapman, a fan, shot him five
times outside his apartment in New York. John was only forty years old.
