Chapter 4: Coordinating Conjunctions Coordinating conjunctions connect words, phrases, and independent clauses. The connected elements are said to be compound. There are only seven coordinating conjunctions: and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet Mark and Jake walked around the block. ‘That sentence has two subjects joined with the conjunction and. That means that this sentence has a compound subject. ‘Mark walked around the block and up the ladder. This sentence has two prepositional phrases joined with the conjunction and. That means that this sentence has a compound prepositional phrase. In this chapter, you'll learn how to diagram compound words, phrases, and sentences. ‘Well begin with compound words. 4.0 Diagramming Compound Words Coordinating conjunctions go on a dashed line between the words that they connect. All of the words in a phrase come together to act as one part of speech. You've already learned about verb phrases (helping verb(s)+ main verb) and prepositional phrases (preposition + object of the preposition). Clauses are groups of words with a subject and a verb. Independent clauses express complete thoughts. They can stand alone as complete ideas, (Note: There are two types of clauses: independent clauses and dependent clauses. We will lea about dependent clauses later.) Coordinating conjunctions are often used to combine two or more sentences into one compound sentence. Here is an example of a compound sentence.
