The document summarizes the symbolism and meanings behind the working tools of a Fellow Craft Freemason - the square, level, and plumb rule. It explains that while operative masons use these tools in building, speculative masons apply their lessons to morality. The square teaches regulating one's actions, the level demonstrates our shared humanity, and the plumb rule connects heaven and earth while teaching uprightness. The overall message conveyed is that through using these tools as moral guidance, Freemasons hope to ascend to immortal dwellings of goodness.

J.W. (returns salute, discharges it and stands). Bro….
(surname only), I now
present to you the working tools of a F.C.F.M., they are the Sq. the L. and the P.R. The Sq. is to try and adjust rectangular corners of buildings, and assist in bringing rude matter into due form. The L. to lay L’s and prove horizontals, and the P.R. to try and adjust uprights whilst fixing them on their proper bases. But as we are not all operative masons, but rather free and accepted, or speculative, we apply these tools to our morals. In this sense the Sq. teaches us to regulate our lives and actions according to the Masonic line and rule, and to harmonise our conduct in this life so as to render is acceptable to that Divine Being from whom all goodness springs, and to who we must give an account of all our actions. The L. demonstrates that we are all sprung from the same stock, partakers in the same nature, and sharers in the same hope, for although distinctions among men are necessary to preserve subordination yet ought no eminence of situation make us forget that we are Brothers, for he who is placed on the lowest spoke of fortunes wheel is equally entitled to our regard, as a time will come; and the wisest of us knows not how soon, when all distinctions, save those of goodness and virtue shall cease, and death, the great leveller of all human greatness reduce us to the same state. The infallible P.R., which, like Jacobs Ladder connects heaven and earth, is the criterion of rectitude and truth. It teaches us to walk justly and uprightly before God and man, neither turning to the right nor left from the paths of virtue, not to be an enthusiast, persecutor, or slandered of religion, neither bending towards avarice, injustice, malice, revenge, nor the envy and contempt of mankind, but giving up every selfish propensity which might injure others. To steer the bark of this life over the seas of passion without quitting the helm of rectitude is the highest perfection to which human nature can attain; and as the builder raises his column by the level and perpendicular, so ought every mason to conduct himself towards this world. To observe a due medium between avarice and profusion, to hold the scales of justice with equal poise, to make his passions and prejudices coincide with the just line of his conduct, and in all his pursuits to have eternity in view. Thus, the Sq. teaches Morality, the L., Equality and the P.R. justness and uprightness of life and actions. Thus by Sq. conduct, L. steps and upright intentions we hope to ascend to those immortal mansions, whence all goodness emanates. On completion sits. S.D. – Salute the J.W. with the sn. of a F.C.F.M. (Can. and S.D. do so, returned by J.W.) Discharge the sn. W.M. – Bro. S.D. you will now place our newly passed Bro. before the S.W. who will give him the benefit of the Charge in this degree. (S.D. takes Can. to SW corner of Lodge, instructs Can. to s.o.w. l.f. and places him immediately in front of. S.W.)
