I NTRODUCTI ON
An optical channel m oni tor (OCM) is a dynamic modu le that m easu res the optical
ch aracteristics, m ai nly power an d frequ ency, of each ch annel presen t in a dense waveleng th
di visi on mu lti plexing (DWDM ) transm ission li ne. Th e OCM is typicall y connected to an optical
tap cou pl er wh ich directs to th e OCM anywh ere between 1 % an d 5 % of th e optical sig nal in
th e fibre-optic transm ission li ne. The data reported by the OCM are u sed i n a reconfig u rable

Background and additional information on this specification template

A.1 Background information on the structure of this specification template
A.1 .1 Selecting “directionally correct” terminology
Term i nolog y i n marketing literature is often sel ected to appear favou rable and this is tru e for
th e termi nolog y for optical ch ann el mon itors.

As an example, datasheets can typical ly specify “channel power accu racy of ± 1 , 0 dB”. I t
wou l d be techn icall y correct bu t ambig u ou s to say that “the channel power accu racy
increased from ± 1 , 0 dB to ± 0, 5 dB”, because the valu e i tself decreased. I t wou ld be clearer
to say th at “th e ch ann el power error decreased from ± 1 , 0 dB to ± 0, 5 dB”. Th is last statem en t
cou ld be described as bei ng “di recti on all y correct”. I n th e comm ercial m arketpl ace, on th e
other hand, promoting “channel power accuracy” rather th an “ch an nel power error” is
preferred.

Th is I n ternati onal Stan dard u ti lizes termi nolog y that offers th e m ost clari ty as opposed to the
term inolog y th at is more prevalen t i n th e marketplace. For exam ple, in Table 1 :
• "error" was selected instead of "accu racy";
• "n on-u ni form ity" was sel ected instead of "u n iform i ty";
• "variabi li ty" was sel ected instead of "repeatabil ity";
• "resol u tion-in terval " was selected instead of "resolu tion ".
A.1 .2 Logical sequence of parameters in Table 1
The parameters l isted i n Tabl e 1 fol low a l og ical sequ ence beg inn in g with the in put
parameters, fol lowed by th e performance param eters, an d en di ng with operating parameters.

I n pu t param eters specify the enti re rang e of optical in pu t condi tions for whi ch the
performance parameters appl y. I n general , the g reater the rang e of i npu t parameters, th e
g reater the specified error of an optical channel m on itor. I n th is part of I EC 62343, the
term inolog y for inpu t parameters is m ade expl ici t by i nclu sion of the word inpu t between
parameter 1 to 1 2. For example, one i n pu t parameter is th e inpu t ch ann els non-u n iform i ty. As
th e inpu t channels non-u ni form ity i ncreases, the more chal len gi ng i t becomes for the channel
mon itor to measure a ch ann el wi th relati vel y low optical power when su rrou nded by channels
with rel atively h igh optical power. Th is is becau se the accu racy of th e m easu remen t of the
rel ati vel y l ow optical power channel will be impacted by optical crosstalk from the
neig hbou ring chan nels wi th rel atively h ig h optical power.

Perform ance parameters su ch as ch ann el power absolu te error are g rouped in the m iddle of
Table 1 from parameter 1 5 to 34.

Operati ng param eters can be fou nd towards the end of Table 1 from parameter 35 and
inclu de the word operating in the term . An example operatin g parameter is operati ng
temperatu re. These parameters represen t th e rang e of operating condi tions over wh ich the
performance parameters shall m eet th eir speci fications. I n g eneral , the broader the rang e of
th e operating specifications, the more ch alleng in g i t is for th e optical channel moni tor to
main tain a specified performance specification .

The expl ici t i den ti fication of inpu t condi tions an d operating param eters is helpful to formu late
th e defini ti ons for the performance param eters: they can be gl obal ly referenced in the
defi ni tions wi th th e si mple phrase “speci fied over all i npu t and operating rang es”.

A.1 .3 Performance parameters hierarchical structure

The term inolog y for th e performance parameters follows a h ierarchical stru ctu re. Th e
hierarchical constru ct can be u sed to create all th e possible perm u tations for all the possi bl e
performance parameters that can be speci fied. Al l su ch perm u tations are sh own in Table 1 .
Bu t typicall y, n ot all performance parameters are speci fi ed in practice. To reflect this, man y
such parameters are l isted as opti onal in Table 1 .

The h ierarch ical stru ctu re consists of a root param eter and parameter attribu te. Root
parameters are:
• chann el power;
• total ban d power;
• OSN R;
• frequ ency.
Each of th ese root parameters can be combin ed with an y of the fol lowin g performance
attribu tes:
• absolu te error;
• relative error;
• variabil ity;
• resolu tion interval.
Th is hierarch ical stru ctu re also facil itates the stream lining of al l the defini ti ons associated with
each performance attribu te. I n th is docu men t, m ost of the defini tions of the performance
parameters are formed accordin g to th e foll owi ng templ ates:
• [root parameter] absol u te error: the maximu m di fference between the measu red [root
parameter] and the calibrated reference [root parameter], (within specific condi ti ons
relevant to th is root parameter) , du ri ng one m easu remen t with in the response ti me,
speci fied over all inpu t an d operatin g rang es;
• [root parameter] relati ve error: th e maxim u m variati on of th e [root parameter] absolu te
error, du ri ng one measu rem ent with in the response ti me, speci fi ed over al l in put and
operati ng ran g es;
• [root parameter] vari ability: the maxim um variation of the [root parameter] absolu te error
over the repeatabi li ty tim e i nterval at a gi ven inpu t and operati ng con dition , specified over
all i npu t and operati ng ran g es;
• [root parameter] resolu ti on in terval : the small est incremen t of the reported [root
parameter] m easu remen t val u e.

A.2 Additional information about reference measurement bandwidth

The reference measurem en t bandwi dth is a valu e selected according to the bit rate and
modu lati on format of the optical sig nal s bein g m easured.
• Typicall y, sm aller reference measu remen t bandwidths are design ed for optical sig nals
m odu lated at sym bol rates of 1 0 Gb/s and bel ow.
• For optical sign als modu lated at sym bol rates of 40 Gb/s and above, the reference
m easu remen t bandwi dth is increased to insu re that th e enti re spectru m of the si gn al is
accou nted for i n the optical power measu remen t.
• For optical sig n als modu lated at sym bol rates of 400 Gb/s and above, th e chan nel pl ans
can be defined on a fl exible g rid. I n th is case, the host system can provide the reference
m easu remen t bandwidth to the optical channel m oni tor for each i ndi vi du al channel in the
scan .

The noise equ i valen t bandwidth is a parameter that sh all be defined to accu ratel y
ch aracterize th e perform ance param eters related to OSN R. Since OSN R is an optional
performance parameter, so is th e noise equ ivalent bandwidth .
• To com pu te th e OSN R, it is u sefu l to fi rst com pu te th e si gnal power, which is the ch an nel
power less th e optical n oise, both measu red i n th e specifi ed reference measu remen t
bandwidth .
• U sing the sig nal power ( Pi ) and th e optical noise ( Ni ) of th e ith channel, as wel l as the
reference measu remen t ban dwi dth ( B r ) an d the n oise equi val ent bandwidth ( B m ) , the
OSN R can th en be calcu lated as defined in I EC 61 280-2-9:

Pi Bm
OSNR = 1 0log 1 0 + 1 0 log 1 0 dB (A. 1 )
