Building Your Personal Brand: Your Stories: Accomplishments

Exercise 1: Creating Your Accomplishments

How do you compete with the hundreds or maybe thousands of people who do similar
work to you?
You do that by focusing on and highlighting your greatest strengths. What are you
good and great at?
This exercise is about helping you position yourself as an authority and expert in your
industry thereby bringing you to the top of mind awareness of executives, decision
makers, influencers and journalists.
Looking at your resume let’s take a task and turn it into an accomplishment.
The best accomplishments include real numbers, dollar savings, and percentage
improvement. You may not have all the information now but do your best to estimate
the numbers for our exercise.
For example: a task might be: responsible for managing all of the company’s databases.
Now let’s turn it into an accomplishment.
Redesigned database structure for 100TB database to double access speed and
reduce data storage requirements by 80% thereby saving $250,000 per year in
storage costs.
Please choose 1 or 2 tasks from your current resume and create accomplishments.
These are that stories that will demonstrate your superior expertise and separate you
from the masses and position you as the expert and establish lots of credibility.
We will discuss everyone’s accomplishments shortly. Please do your best to estimate
the numbers as this exercise is more about understanding the process then calculating
the exact numbers. You can always revise it later once you have the actual numbers.
