Be SMART
SMART is a convenient acronym for the set of criteria that a goal must have in order
for it to be realised by the goal achiever:

Specific detail what your goal is and how you will meet it. Outline the benefits of
achieving the goal.

Measurable make sure progress towards goal completion can be measured.

Actions what steps will help you achieve your goal? Are they achievable?

Realistic the goal must be something that can be done. Acknowledge your
abilities and any limitations. Is the goal in line with your values, desires,
ethics, life purpose?

Timely set a deadline for achieving the goal

Example

years and return to Jamaica to implement a smoking related public health initiative in
his workplace

Specific Masters/ public health /UNSW (where what when how)

Measurable Within 1.5 years

Actions Complete 12 subjects over 1.5 years.

John’s work has given him 1.5 years off to study
