Module 1 – Using the Internet

CNC01 – Using the Internet | S2 20/21

Analysis Phase

Description of Module 1

It consists of two units and is designed to enable learners to develop the requisite skills,
knowledge and attitude to use the Internet.

Audience: Technical Individuals (16-50 years)

Required Text: Mueller, S. (2004). Upgrading and repairing PCs 15th Anniversary Edition.
Que Publishing.

Module 1 has 2 units:

Unit 1 - Troubleshoot and resolve Internet connection problems.

Unit 2 - Setting up a computer system so that it will be able to access the Internet.
Unit 1

Unit 1- Description

Unit one looks at Internet connections, troubleshooting and resolving issues associated with such
connections.

Instructional Goal: The instructional goal of this unit is to give learners the opportunity to
become exposed to troubleshooting Internet related problems and resolving the issues.

Design and Development Phase

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this Unit you will be able to:

● Define what it means to troubleshoot


● State the importance of adhering to Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S)
requirements
● Explain the importance of checking power supplies and switches
● Outline the importance of carrying out system adjustments/ testing on replaced
components
● Describe and demonstrate knowledge of diagnosing faults at 100% efficiency
● Demonstrate how to test and confirm that faults identified have been rectified
● Apply knowledge and understanding gained on how to effectively troubleshooting and
resolving issues associated Internet connections

Strategies/Techniques used during the lesson.

● Discussion Forum: Students will discuss in peers on ways to troubleshoot Internet


issues
● Online Synchronous sessions: These online sessions will be facilitated using BBB
sessions
● Video presentation
● Ongoing assessments
Instructional Strategies

The following instructional strategies should be employed to facilitate effective delivery of this
unit:

Demonstration/ Guided Practice

By use of online video and possibly the actual equipment, have learners observe procedures
involved in troubleshooting an Internet connection. Have them pay special attention and take
notes where necessary on the steps taken, tools and equipment used and precautionary measures
depending on the particular fault.

Use of video/ Experiment

Allow learners to view instructional videos on troubleshooting/ diagnosing and resolving Internet
connection problems. Present a scenario where the learner needs to resolve an Internet
connection problem. Allow the learner to carry out various steps that would have been presented
in the instructional videos.

Assessments

Allow learners to upload a video to YouTube of them troubleshooting an Internet issue using
ping and post the link in the Learning Management System Portal.

● Using descriptive text properly so that screen readers can read them
● Use visual indicator to assist in highlighting or making a selection for colour or
text
● Use large fonts, high contrast, narrower page formats to allow users with a
cognitive or learning disability to benefit from illustrations and very basic text.
● Make sure LMS has good code quality as there are no broken links.
● Use of JavaScript, valid HTML/HTML5 and CSS.
● LMS must have a responsive web design for mobile and none mobile devices and
menus are visible and responsive.
● Add access panel for quizzes and development of all course material such as
course outline and schedules
● Cite sources correctly
● Try to be as authentic in content creation
● Use Creative Commons (CC) resources properly
● Use fair use copyrighted resources for the purposes of teaching, research,
reporting

Implementation Phase

● Launch the LMS so learners can be added.


● Enrol learners in their courses
● Add facilitators and administrator with various permissions
● Keep informed with your LMS provider and ask for their advice on how the
process is working
● Test various features and plugins for full functionality and usability as well as all
accessibility functions for any learner with disabilities. Pay keen attention to SSO
features.

Evaluation Phase

● Reflect on past processes of LMS and seek ways to improve future ones.
● Get feedback from all stakeholders (principal, faculty, staff) involved as well as
learners
● Collate information for improvement purposes, address issues and build a better
process for implementing LMS features and modifications.
Unit 2

Unit 2- Description

Analysis Phase

Unit two looks at setting up a computer system so that it will be able to access the Internet.

Instructional Goal: The instructional goal of this unit is to give learners the opportunity to
become exposed to setting up a computer system so that it will be able to access the Internet and
its resources.

Design and Development Phase

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this Unit you will be able to:

● Define what is an Internet Service Provider (ISP)


● Describe the ISP selection process
● Discuss steps to load selected browser
● State procedures to configure browser
● Outline steps to launch browser
● Demonstrate how to open the necessary application (s) to browse the internet
● Apply knowledge and understanding gained on how to accurately install browser
software

Research

Have learners research available internet packages, cost, connectivity, support level, protocols
used and equipment required by each internet service provider and compare and contrast each
ISP (Flow, Digicel, Jay’sWireless) researched.

Group Work and Discussion

Allow learners to work with peers within LMS forums and discuss the procedures they would
use to connect a workstation to the internet. A group presentation, reinforcing the main points of
the objects will be done.

Unit 3

Unit 3 - Access files and documents as remote access on the internet using search engines.

Unit two looks at the various ways files and resources can be accessed on the internet.

Instructional Goal: The instructional goal of this unit is to give learners the opportunity to
acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to identify and use remote resources.

Design and Development Phase

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this Unit you will be able to:

● Define what is remote access


● Describe the various ways to access files and documents using a search engine
● Discuss at least 4 search engines and what makes them unique.
● Browse the internet to find related sites via links according
● Send and retrieve an email

Strategies/Techniques used during the lesson.

● Discussion Forum: Students will discuss in peers on ways to troubleshoot Internet issues
● Online Synchronous sessions: These online sessions will be facilitated using BBB
sessions
● Video presentation
● Ongoing assessments

Instructional Strategies

The following instructional strategies should be employed to facilitate effective delivery of this
unit:
Demonstration/ Guided Practice

By use of online video and possibly the actual equipment, have learners observe procedures
involved in using a search engine to browse the internet as well as use a web browser to send an
email. Demonstrate to learners the steps involved in accessing various internet resources such as
videos, pictures and articles.

Research

Have learners research the various web browsers, search engines and email services.

Group Work and Discussion

Allow learners to work with peers within LMS forums and discuss the procedures they would
use find a picture on Google and send that picture to another peer using email preferably Outlook
or GMail. A group presentation, reinforcing the main points of the objects will be done.
