TOOL OR PROCESS USED TO MANAGE HAZARDS IN THE WORKPLACE

CONSIST OF THREE ACTIVITIES:
1. IDENTIFICATION OF HAZARDS
2. ASSESSMENT OF RISK
3. CONTROL OF HAZARDS
HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
• Anything or condition with the potential to cause harm

HEALTH HAZARDS SAFETY HAZARDS

• Physical Hazards • Mechanical Hazards
• Chemical Hazards • Heights Hazards
• Biological Hazards • Electrical Hazards
• Psychosocial Hazards
• Fire/Explosion Hazards
• Ergonomic Hazards
• Confined space Hazards

JUST BECAUSE "YOU’RE DOING IT FOR YEARS“

DOESN'T MEAN THAT A HAZARD DOESN'T EXIST.
HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
• Anything or condition with the potential to cause harm

HAZARD TYPES
• Obvious Hazard - is apparent to the senses.
(e.g. unguarded machinery, building defects, faulty electrical equipment).
• Concealed Hazard - is not apparent to the senses
(e.g. electricity, presence of toxic vapors, high frequency noise).
• Developing Hazard- cannot be recognized immediately and will develop over the time.
(e.g. a worn tire on a mobile crane, Worn steel wire ropes, cables )
• Transient Hazard- is an intermittent or a temporary hazard.
(e.g. overload of machinery, when a confined space permit has expired, intermittent
electrical or and mechanical defect).
HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
• POTENTIAL CONTRIBUTIONS

UNSAFE BEHAVIORS UNSAFE CONDITIONS

• Operating without authority • Improper guarding
• Failure to warn others • Defective equipment
• Working at unsafe speeds • Inadequate or defective warning
• Making safety devices inoperative devices or systems
• Using unsafe equipment • Hazardous arrangement or storage
• Failure to use PPE • Improper illumination
• Improper ventilation
HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
• CAN BE IDENTIFIED THROUGH
• Risk analysis
• Workplace inspection
• Safety audits
• job safety analysis
• Feedback from workers
• Observations
• Advice from specialists
• Accident records
• MSDS/CSDS
RISK ASSESSMENT
LOOKING AT THE POSSIBILITY OF INJURY OR HARM OCCURING TO A
PERSON EXPOSED TO A HAZARD

RISK - chance that a person will be harmed or experience an

adverse health effect if exposed to a hazard
SEVERITY - adverse effect of hazard to the worker
LIKELIHOOD - chances of hazard to happen

PERSON EXPOSED TO A HAZARD
RISK ASSESSMENT
RISK ASSESSMENT
• Categorize the hazards to different groups
• Decide certain groups for risk elimination,
reduction or control
RISK CONTROL
• employing measures which will eliminate or reduce
the risk of a person being exposed to a hazard.

Selecting control often involves:

a. evaluating and selecting short- and long-term controls
b. implementation of short-term measures to protect workers until
permanent controls can be put in place
c. implementation of long-term controls when reasonably practicable
RISK CONTROL
RISK CONTROL
HIERARCHY OF CONTROLS
• ELIMINATION - removes the hazards at the source. The preferred solution to
protect workers because no exposure can occur (ex.: a. stopping the use of toxic
chemicals, heavy object or sharp tool)
• SUBSTITUTION - using a safer alternative to the source of the hazard (ex.: using of
plant-based printing ink as a substitute to solvent-based inks)
• ENGINEERING CONTROLS - reduce or prevent hazards from coming into contact
with worker. (ex.: Redesign, Isolation, Automation, Barriers, Adsorption, Dilution)
• ADMINISTRATITVE CONTROLS - establishes work practices that reduces the
duration frequency or intensity of exposure to hazards (ex.: job rotations, safe
work procedures, supervision and training, hygiene practices, housekeeping
repair and maintenance)
• PPE - equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards

What: Construct a HIRAC report on your company from OJT – List 10 hazards, include
picture/s if there are any. (for those who have not yet done their OJT, you can utilize
UNO-R as your “company”) (will be recorded as your PQ#2 and Written Report for
Prelim)
Format: Please MS Teams – Print in a LONG BOND PAPER
Deadline: October 9, 2023 (09:00-10:00)
