THE TEACHER AS A
COMMUNITY LEADER
PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION 1, 2,3
Teachers are crucial to the growth of
individuals and societies. This concept
was concretized by Jan and Ed Philpot
(1994), who promoted a closer bond
between the community, school, and
home by having teachers create and carry
out efficient activities. A teacher is an
active leader in the community, thus their
existence is not just restricted to the four
walls of the classroom or the school
grounds.
In their communities, teachers always assume
leadership positions, particularly in matters pertaining
to the education and well-being of young children.
Additionally, they serve as leaders in a variety of
community-based cultural development initiatives.
Teachers support their local communities where they
belong by offering professional and technical help.
Teachers are part of the Committee on
Child Protection Education and Welfare
in the Barangay where they belong.
Teachers are particularly involved in
implementing Republic Act 7610, also
known as “Special Protection of
Children Against Abuse, Exploitation,
and Discrimination Act,” which contains
specific provisions regarding child
protection.
Teachers lead and plan community events for
children, women, and youth in addition to offering
advise on problems pertaining to education. In
addition to instructing cultural performances
including songs and dances, physical education
teachers coach athletes. While some educators are
elected to positions as leaders in community-based
organizations, others judge contests. Teachers
consistently take on a variety of leadership positions
in the communities to which they belong.

Teachers also act as
advocates for a variety of
causes, including high-quality
education, the care and
protection of children and
adolescents, the
advancement of literacy,
human rights, wellbeing and
health, and justice.
They encourage the development of community
values, free and fair elections, and educating people
about the consequences of irresponsible resource use.
Teachers are frequently portrayed as liberation
fighters, unifying diverse community members to
uphold human dignity.
