Page 1 of S1BO1 1005 March 2009 FAQs FOR TELEMATICS CONTROL UNIT (TCU) CLAIM SUBMISSION 1.What are the Electronic Serial Number (ESN) and IMEI? “The Electronic Serial Number (ESN) isthe serial number of the COMA cellular telephone embedded within a TCU. ‘The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is the serial number of the GSM cellular telephone embedded within a TCU. 2, What purpose does the ESN or IME! fulfil? CDMA wireless network: The ESN is transmitted to the cel site and used in Conjunction with the NAM to verify and identity a specifictelephone ina celular system. “The NAM (Number Assignment Module) is the EPROM in a celular telephone that hholds information such as the MIN, MON and SIDH. ‘The MIN (Mobile identification Number isthe wireless carier’s internal number ofthe cellular telephone. ‘The MON (Mobile Directory Number) is simply the dial-atle phone number of the Cellular telephone. Sometimes, the MIN and MDN are thesame. ‘The SIDH (System Identification for Home System) tells the cellular system what ccollular cartier your service originates from. This is used in roaming: thats, cellular ‘alls made in an area not served by your cellular provider. GSM wireless network: The IMEI number is used by the GSM (Global System for Mobility) network to identity valid registered telephones. ‘The IME! is linked within the BMW NA database to the associated ICCID (Integrated Circuit Card identifier) of a SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) chip in the phone module within the TCU. The ICCID and the VIN of the vehicle are pared atthe time the TCU is installed in a vehicle at the factory. This paring facilitates the ink between the VIN and. the IMEI for DCSnet. ‘The MSISDN is the dial-able phone number of the GSM celular phone. 3. Does the Telematics Control Unit contain acell phone? Yes; however, itcan only be operated in conjunction with the BMW Assist services. “The operation of the TCU is separate from any hand heldcellular phone that may be installed or paired via Bluetooth within the vehicle.Page 2 019 ‘4. What is Telematics? ‘Telematics is the convergence of computing and information technology together with wireless connectivity and GPS location technologies within a mobile platform. Whatif I can’t find the ESN or IMEI? BMW NA has programmed DCSnet to prompt you (as shown in the screen shot below) for the ESN / IMEI whenever a TCU part number is en:ered. You will not receive the prompt for non-applicable parts. Ifyou are prompted for the ESN / IMEI from the newly installed TCU and your tech failed to record this information, then you will ned toask the customer to return the vehicle to your center so this information can visually 9¢ noted or read out via your DIS. orGT1 tester. What do Ido if the new TCU is reported as deactivated? ‘You will need to contact BMW Aftersales Telematics Support at (201) 307-4347 i you receive the error message that the newly installed TCU is deactivated upon entering the ESN /IMEI in DCSnet. Verity that you have entered the correct newly installed TCU ESN /IMEI and make the correction it needed before you cal. 8. What do Ido if the new TCU is reported as associated / assigned with a different vehicle? Every TCU has @ unique ESN /IMEI number and duplicates do not exist. Pease check the ESN / IME! again and confirm that it matches the one on the TCU sticker from the newiy installed unit. | your information is correct, cick on the vehicle history link forthe VIN listed in the terror message to identify the other center and their TCU claim.
