physics revision chapter 3

Newtons first law: force:

Force : A force is a push or pull acting on an object as a result of its interaction with another object

Measuring unit: newtons (n)

Vector: a quantity that has direction and magnitude/ scalar: quantity that only has magnitude

Force can affect in change of speed, direction and shape

A resultant force (net force) is a single force that describes all of the forces operating on a body, this
determines the direction and magnitude

The object that has force applied on it must move with a constant speed and same direction to be
considered as newtons first law force

Forces and combine produced balanced and unbalanced forces:-

Balanced force: forces have combined to cancel each other with no resultant force

Unbalanced force: forces have combined to have a resultant force

A resultant force can be calculated by: Example of opposite direction

Forces on opposite direction: subtraction
object 60n
80n
Forces on same direction: addition
80-60=20n resultant force to the left

Example of same direction Example of balanced force

20n 60n
object object
30n 80n 20n
30+20= 50n resultant force to the right 80-(60+20)=0n

Newtons second law : motion :

Motion: the acceleration of an object is proportional to the resultant acting on it and inversely
proportional to the objects mass

-an object will accelerate in response to a resultant force

- the bigger the resultant force the bigger the acceleration

-the bigger the objects mass the smaller the acceleration

The force and acceleration must act in the same direction
