I have had unique experiences and challenges in life that have moulded me to embrace

leadership, serving others and having the will to tackle the challenges I or those close to me
encounter. Upon enrolment, I will be a first generation college student in the United States of
America. This factor gives me a sense of pride and bestows upon me, a yearning to succeed in
my academics, extracurricular activities and positive contributions to the community at and
around the University of Miami.

As a Kenyan American, my heritage has instilled in me a unique cultural perspective, igniting a

passion for understanding and advocating for African cultures, history and contemporary
challenges. My journey as a first-generation college student underscores my determination and
resilience in navigating a new educational path with limited familial precedent.

My high school experience gave me an opportunity to serve my community and nurture my

leadership, communication and inter-personal skills. As an active member of the Public
Relations Committee and Student Council, I improved communication, introduced fresh
traditions for sport events and worked towards increasing attendance for women’s sports and
theatre events; showcasing my commitment to gender equality and inclusivity. I learnt the power
of innovation and collaboration.

I channelled my dedication towards combating racism and discrimination at school and in the
broader community as the Vice President of the Black Student Union.

I will carry on and rejuvenate the passion to be an agent of change, to learn and contribute
positively to the community upon enrolment.
