SCRIPT:

ACT I

Scene 1

(Children 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 are on the left side of the room/stage. Children 7, 8, 9, 10 are


on the right side of the room/stage. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella They are
sitting on their throne in the middle of the room/stage. There is a chest full of jewels
on the floor)

– The lights turn on –

CHILD 1: A long, long time ago.

CHILDREN 7, 8, 9, 10: How long?


CHILD 2: More than five hundred years ago

CHILDREN 7, 8, 9, 10: Ahhh!

CHILD 3: It was in the year 1492 when an Italian navigator

CHILD 4: I sail the ocean.

CHILDREN 7, 8, 9, 10: Why?

CHILD 5: Because since he was a child he was interested in the sky and the sea.

CHILD 6: He liked boats and loved sailing.

CHILD 1: Who was that man?


CHILDREN 7, 8, 9, 10: Christopher Columbus!

Scene 2

( Christopher Columbus enters and stands in front of King Ferdinand and Queen
Isabel, facing the audience)

CHILD 2: Christopher Columbus knew that the earth was round, not flat.

CHILDREN 7, 8, 9, 10: Round not flat!

CHILD 3: He decided to talk to the Catholic Monarchs. Queen Isabella I of Castile,


and King Ferdinand II of Aragon.

CHILDREN 7, 8, 9, 10: From Spain.

(Christopher Columbus turns to face the king and queen)


CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS: Your majesties...I know that the earth is round, and I
know how I can reach the Indies by a shorter route. Please help me.

CHILDREN 7, 8, 9, 10: Please, please, please.

KING FERDINAND: No! We don't have money, and we think you're lying. Plus, there
are monsters in the sea.

CHILDREN 7, 8, 9, 10: Oh! Monsters in the sea!

QUEEN ELIZABETH: I'm sorry. We can't help you. Your trip will be very expensive.

(Christopher Columbus turns to face the audience, and leaves the stage/room)

CHILD 4: Christopher Columbus left disappointed, but continued thinking about his
dream of finding a shorter route to the Indies, and went to see the King of Portugal.
Scene 3

(The King of Portugal is standing in the middle of the stage. Christopher Columbus
enters and stands in front of him, making signs with his hand and face as if he were
speaking)

CHILDREN 7, 8, 9, 10: But he didn't believe him.

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS SINGS:

Who can help me

Help cross this sea

Beyond

Than I have ever sailed

and find

And arrive at the land of the Indies.

(Christopher Columbus leaves the stage)

Scene 4

CHILD 5: Several years later, Christopher Columbus returned to speak with Queen
Isabella and King Ferdinand.
(Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand are in the middle of the stage. Christopher
Columbus enters and stands in front of them)

CRISTOBAL COLUMBUS: Your majesties...I know that you trust me...please help me
navigate the wide sea. I will claim the land for you…for Spain!

QUEEN ELIZABETH: What do you need to do it?

CRISTOBAL COLUMBUS: I need money to buy ships.

QUEEN ELIZABETH SINGS:

Oh my King, how good you are

Oh my King, what great power

Before you I come submissive

To ask you only that

give me money for

Buy some boats

to a sailor

that I met
(The Queen takes the chest with jewels and gives it to Christopher Columbus)

QUEEN ISABEL: Take my jewels, go and buy some caravels, and conquer your
dream...for the glory of Castile.

(Christopher Columbus takes the chest with the jewels).

KING FERNANDO: We now grant you the name of Admiral of the Ocean.

CRISTOBAL COLUMBUS: (places his hand on his chest) I will sail far away, and I will
conquer new lands and treasures for Castilla y León!

(Christopher Columbus comes out with the chest of jewels)

- The lights are turned off -

Act II
(King Ferdinand and the Queen leave the stage/room. The Sailors and Christopher
Columbus enter and stand in the middle of the stage/room where three ships are)

– The lights turn on –

CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS : (to the Sailors) Come with me to the Indies. We will
sail in three caravels: La Pinta, La Niña, and Santa María.

SAILORS: Yes! We will go with you! We don't mind sailing to new lands!

THE SAILORS SING:

We're free!

With your face in the sun

We're free!

We do not care

Sail to the Indies

While

Let's be free

While

Let's be free
(The Sailors get on the boats)

CHILDREN 7, 8, 9, 10: A ship set out to sail across the world!

CHILD 6: And who was the Admiral of the ship?

CHILDREN 7, 8, 9, 10: I sail through the sea.

BOY 1: In 1492!

CHILDREN 7, 8, 9, 10: It was Christopher Columbus!

SAILOR 1: I'm scared!

SAILOR 2: I'm thirsty!


SAILORS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6: There is no water to drink!

SAILOR 3: I'm hungry!

SAILORS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6: And there is nothing to eat.

SAILOR 4: Admiral… this is not the route!

THE SAILORS SING AND DANCE:

(Christopher Columbus and the Sailors leave the ships. Christopher Columbus
kneels and kisses the ground)

CRISTOBAL COLUMBUS: (places his right hand on his chest) I take this land in the
name of their majesties, the King and Queen of Castile and León! From now on this
land will be known as San Salvador.

- The lights are turned off -
