CConeuling Engineer: Abie J (/uthors/eansing-egineerAsi/) Inthe absence of vendor quotations or detailed engineering, preliminary dimensions of skids or packages can be estimated quickly using the ratio method. This method is particularly useful for operators, which traditionally have a limited database compared to contractors, To overcome this challenge, operators have created, maintained and organized a dimensional database of existing process equipment and skids, (/mesia/8970/abid9-01 pa) 6.1 pian man The overall dimensions ofa skid are related to Key parameters, such as diameter and length of pressure vessel, highest flange rating, outer diameter (OD) of pipe, and the number of slots or parallel runs. Skid length ratio is established by dividing the existing skid length by such key parameters. Skid width rato is established similarly The average length ratio and width rato are calculated to improve accuracy and ‘minimize variations The estimated length and width of a new skid can be calculated by multiplying key parameters with respective average length ratios and average width ratios. This concept is llustrated by an example of estimating the dimensions of a 10-set, Class 600, 4-in, inlet x 8-in production header conventional inlet manifold. This method can be applied to estimate the dimensions of a horizontal vessel ski (based on vessel diameter and length), a metering skid (based on L/D ratio and width/rur/lange OD) or cooling water unit plot (based on cooling tower cell width). An estimate accuracy of up to +/~ 1,000 mm can be achieved when a dimensional database with consistent criteria, (access width, isolation philosophy, extent of automation/instrumentation, etc.) is maintained and updated: on a continuous basis. Example 1 To determine the dimensions ofthe previously mentioned example (10-slot, Class 600, 4-in inlet x 8-n. production conventional inlet ‘manifold, the data here is available from past records /equioment lst (TABLE 1). The skid length depends on the numberof slots and the (0D of the flange (inlet line), which is highlighted pink in FIG. 1. So, the skid length ratios determined by the “length ger slot per flange OD” Similarly, the key parameter for skid width is the highest flange rating of the biggest line (\e, the production header, highlighted yellow in FIG. 1), Therefore, the skid width ratio is the “width per flange OD" TABLE 1 is rearranged to retrieve refined/stalistical data. Nete: The average skid ratios at the end ofthe table even out the dimensions from different vendors. © nips: mw hydracarbonprecessing.commagazine!20 9/march-2019/columns/projec-management-sstiate-skid-and-package-dimensions/ ue ‘12324, +28 PM Project Management: Estimate skid and package dimensions. (/media/9057 /bidable2_3p9) AAs seen in TABLE 2, considerable variations exist due to inconsistent access space, dtferent isolation, et. Itis necessary to adjust/normalize dimensions on a consistent design basis, This wll also help benchmark skid dimensions (TABLE 3) The overall length ofthe skid is determined by Ea, 1 Number of slots x flange OD x (average lengthslot/tlange OD) a where 4% 273% 45 2,334 mm-12,350 mm The overall width of the skid is determined by Eq, 2. Flange OD x (average width/tange OD) @ where 419 x 8.0 = 3,359 mm-3,400 mm, Example 2: Horizontal vessel skid ‘Skid wiath depends mainly on the diameter of the vessel and the number of major (2 3-n} lines connected to the vessel. Note: The size/flange rating ofthe line(s) do not have a major impact on the width ratio because, as these paramelers/attributes change, the width ratio will ajust accordingly A key parameter for skid length is the tangentto-tangent length of the vessel. As previously discussed, the basis ‘of design must be documented for real results. Based on limited available vendor data, the average length ratio is 1.5, while the average width ratio is 1.8 This method can be applied to estimate dimensions of a2 x 100% horizontal pump skid (based on single-pump skid dimensions), a ‘metering skid (based on L/D ratio and width/run/lange OD) of a cooling water unit plot (based on cooling tower cell width). nips: ww hydrocarbonprecessing.commagazine!20 9/march-2019/columns/projec-management-sstiate-skid-and-package-dimensions/ 24 ‘rasz4, 128 Projet Management Estimate kid and pacage drensons Takeaway An estimated accuracy of +/~ 1,000 mm can be achieved when a dimensional database with consistent criteria (ie, access width, isolation philosophy, extent of automation/instrumentation, etc) is maintained and updated on a continuous basis. Furthermore, this concept is based on limited available data. tis expected that major oll and gas companies and/or contractors will urther develop and benchmark data for the benefit of knowledge-sharing in the oll and gas industry.
